I think you may want to edit your trip a bit--or tell us what you have in mind.Savannah and Charleston are pretty close together and are about 6-8 hours driving time from Atlanta. I would choose one of them (Charleston would be my choice). The OUter Banks is a LONG way to drive for a beach (on your limited time). Go to a beach near Charleston--they are beautiful.
You might google for hotels in these places. In Charleston the Hampton Inn is very nice and includes breakfast. I have forgotten when you are making this trip.

I will add another idea for your hotels. You might try bidding on Priceline--bid on 3* or higher and bid "low". Go to biddingfortravel.com and look for advice there. You might do very well that way. Your price range is not "cheap" although the larger cities and destinations do have more expensive prices.

I agree about the trip itinerary. The Outer Banks is awesome, but I think would be hard to include in a trip along w/ Charleston and Savannah. Charleston and Savannah are about 5-6 hours from Atlanta depending. Maybe you could choose just one beach to visit and then drive inland for some other views. If not to Atlanta, maybe the mountains in North Georgia or Carolina.

I have had good luck finding reasonable (and lower) rates on Orbitz and Travelocity. I go to Orbitz, Travelocity, Expedia, and Hotels.com, find hotels that meet my criteria and then compare prices. I have found better prices that way than actually calling the hotel and trying to bargain. I have never tried any of the bidding sites--I admit I am a bit skeptical about not knowing or seeing the place until after I pay. I have used them for airfares and my experience with that has been mediocre--not bad really, but not great either. I choose to use the sites where I have more control. Also, some of the sites will allow you to choose what type of rate and have special rates in addition to the internet rate--I try all of them to see which is lowest. They all offer senior rates, too.

In Georgia, try the Residence Inn Chains. You'll find them under www. Residence Inns.com
Savannah has many listings under www. savannahvisit.com
There is a lovely hotel we always stay in Charleston. It is the Courtyard Downtown and it's not your typical Courtyard. It's right on the water next to a lovely marina. Be sure to ask for a riverview room. I believe you can also find this location at www. marriott.com

As for Atlanta, the size and traffic affects where you want to stay depending on what you have decided to visit. Which of the suggestions given to you in your earlier posting sounded attractive?

Rooms in Atlanta will be much cheaper on the weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), traffic will be lighter, but the tourist sites will be busier.

If you do a search for Atlanta on this board you will find many specific hotel recommendations in Downtown, Midtown, and Buckhead. Suburban locations may also be appropriate, depending on what you want to visit. I would not recommend the airport area hotels.

The usual "grazie"..

We arrive on 14 August and we fly back to Italy on 24th. We prefer visiting (we have already been in USA several times..) small places, not crowded that allow us to understand your history, way of life, wildlife.... just to give you an example in Atlanta we plan to spend 1 day max visiting CocaCola World, the High museum and 2 / 3 hour on walking experience in some areas.

I know, it's difficult to explain...

Grazie again, any input you give us is welcome as you have already done.
Arrivederci.

I would try hotwire.com. I just booked a room at the Hilton Atlanta Airport for $40.00. I've used Priceline, but with Hotwire you can see the low rates before you book.

You will find accomodations are very moderate ($) in the south at this time of year. It is VERY hot, much like Italy in August I would think.

You should have no trouble finding adequate accomodation. If you stay at a Best Western or a Holiday Inn, they will help you to find a room at your next destination. This is not a time of year when you must have advanced reservations. You should be fine just touring from day to day.

www.bestwestern.com will offer you choices in both big cities and small towns.
www.choicehotels.com is another good reference.

Atlanta--World of Coca-Cola is in downtown and High Museum is in Midtown. Both are served by MARTA, the train. I would suggest you stay in a hotel in Buckhead (search earlier postings of those who've stayed at the specific hotels), take the train downtown to World early in the morning when it opens so you don't have to wait in line outside in the heat. Then you could walk through Underground and its shops, deciding if you want to continue to CNN and take the studio tour or get back on the train to Midtown and visit the High Museum, enjoying its air conditioning in the afternoon. You can take the train back to Buckhead where there are many restaurants to choose from for dinner. You could take a walk in any of the residential neighborhoods in the Buckhead area or Midtown area to get away from the busy traffic on Peachtree Street. There are some very pleasant areas near Peachtree Battle, for example. Perhaps others who live in the city could suggest specific areas that would be interesting walks easily accessible from the train stations. Sometimes sidewalks are difficult to find. There is a "freedom walk" route through downtown that passes historic sites, but it will be very hot in downtown Atlanta in August, so I don't recommend it as a pleasant walking experience in the afternoon.
