Topping for Tracy:
I had to look this one up, and I lived in NC for nearly 40 years.
Tracy, as you probably read, Hot Springs is in the Appalachian mountains in NC about 40 miles north of Asheville. Asheville is a great little city, and the area around Asheville is beautiful--especially in the Fall when you're going.

I was with Chuck--40 years in NC and a lot of mountain travels and I have never heard of it. All Chuck said is true about the surrounding area. You also need to be aware that there is only camping at that site--the hotel burned.
There are numerous "springs" locations--the most posh would be White Sulphur Springs in WVA--very elegant hotel and spa.

I did a little searching online to see what I could find about Hot Springs and found that the town maintains a website...
www.hotspringsnc.org
According to the site, this village was once a nationally renowned resort home to a grand hotel that burned down, as did the two more that were built on the same site... and today the town is a sedate place to relax, far removed from hustle and bustle. The nearest larger towns and cities it is located near are Greeneville and Johnson City/Kingsport/Bristol, TN and Asheville, NC.

The web can provide more information but there is not lots to see in Hot Springs. It is one of the main towns on the Appalachian Trail, has white water rafting on the French Broad River, and, of course, the hot springs.
We bathed in the hot springs about 7 years ago and I thought it was fun. We went on a cold, clear winter night, and the stars were great. The springs were/are fed in to hot tubs like you would buy at Sears. Everything was clean and the water was great given the air temperature was in the 30s/40s.
There have been several major hotels on the property but all of them burned. Another claim to fame was one of the resorts held German Pows in WWI (WWII?). The locals remember them fondly.
I'm not sure I'd recommend adding too many miles to your trip to visit Hot Spring but if you are in the area, it might be worth a visit.
