hersey/lancaster weekend getaway
I am looking for some help with this area....my husband and I are looking to get away without the kids and head here...my question is are there any hotels (other than hershey hotel) or even better inns that you can recommend that would be relaxing and nice, possibly with a pool outside and garden area to relax in or anything else pampering? Also, what things you recommend in amish country near this area? Thanks for your help, Amy

You might want to look into Willow Valley south of Lancaster. It's a large inn on beautiful grounds, including a golf course and a pond with gazebo, and with both indoor and outdoor pools. The restaurant is known for Penna. Dutch buffets. The only drawbacks are it's a good hour's drive from Hershey and, because of the owners' religious beliefs, it serves no alcohol.

The central markets in the towns in the area are really nice - most have Amish and/or Mennonite merchants. Lancaster's I think has become a litte more "gourmet" over the years, but the York Market is still the same as it always was. I think York's market days are Tuesday and Saturday. I have heard that there's a huge flea market in Ephrata called the Green Dragon that's really fun. In Strasburg there is a historic railway with a train ride if you are interested in trains. If the kids are young there's also Dutch Wonderland, a small amusement park in Lancaster on Route 30.

Amy, I'd suggest checking out this website for accommodations in the Lancaster area... www.padutchlodging.com/search Personally I'd recommend staying at the Netherlands Inn & Spa in Strasburg although I have not stayed there since it changed ownership. Known formally as the Strasburg Inn, it is located about five miles southeast of Lancaster.

Hi
In Lancaster there's an Eden resort that I see as I'm travelling on Route 30 and it appears to be a lovely place.
I've never stayed there but I would imagine it's convenient to many sights like Strasburg and Hersey.
As to Willow Valley - I've never stayed there either but I have eaten there and I wasn't too impressed as the food was quite bland. Portions were large but food was tasteless.

Just returned from a longg weekend in Lancaster county. We visit often, so I can try to help. We always stay at the Historic Strasburg Inn, it is now called the Netherlands Inn ans Spa. The rooms are nice, and a king deluxe room is $129.00 per night. (do a google search and type in Historic strasburg inn and the websit will show up) It is not far from Hershey, 30 minute drive and an easy drive (we just did that too, very easy drive). The resort is on a huge property, very nice, lots of flowers. You can rent bikes, they have a heated outdoor pool, free breakfast, and a brand new spa for massages, facials and other pampering(it just opened June 2nd). The food is good, the restaurant on premisis is The Bistro, you can also dine on the outdoor patio there. It's a nice place to stay because you are away from all the hustle and bustle of the main hwy, but close enough to everything.
For things to do there is the Strasburg Rail Road, which is a must do. You can also find great shopping in the outlet stores, Ralph Lauren being a favorite but there are many many stores there on the main highway in malls. For great ice cream and burgers go to the Freeze and Frizz, a cute burger and ice cream place just down the street. Another nice place to eat it the Revere Tavern. Nothing is very expensive, nothing very fancy, just casual and fun. It's like going back in time, going there reminds me of the vacations we used to go on when we were kids.
We always found the Strasburg Inn to be centrally located, It sounds like what you are looking for. It is not far from anything, but it is far enough from the main strip (a mile or two) so you feel like you are in Lancaster PA. There are lancaster county booklets everywhere, which has a map inside it and all the things to see and do. It also will tell you how to get to Hershey.

There are soo many hotels, inss and B&Bs in the hershey area. COCo nights, spinners, the hershey lodge, the Palm motel. Also in Lebanon county there is a GREat hotel called the latern lodge, its about 40 min form hershey and 15 min from parts of lancaster. There are also amish that live arounf the latern lodge. Roots (an almish farm market) market is held on Tuesdays and the larger, but more commericailized Green Dragon is on fridays. I reccommend eating breakfast at least once at Shady Maple Smorgasboard. Its loceated in Blue ball (funny i know) Lancaster county, and has a HUGE (and i mean HUGE) buffet, there is a omlet station, a pancake and waffel bar, lots of local favorites (scrapple, and S.O.S) they even have slushi machines running at 7 am

Conewago Manor Inn www.conewagomanorinn.com in Elizabethtown is beautiful. We stayed in Gentleman Smith's Quarters and loved it. Very romantic - perfect getaway without children. Hosts were very helpful and friendly and prepared a wondrful breakfast for us.
Short drive to Hershey for good restaurants. Try the Sunday brunch at the Hotel Hershey on the weekends - desserst to die for!
