Hawaii - which island?

Planning a 25th anniversary trip to Hawaii in September. We will probably have 7 nights there, and was wondering which island(s) to visit. Interests are hiking, kayaking, birding, beaching. Prefer to stay away from large resorts. Nightlife, upscale dining, and shopping are not a priority. Thanks!!

you can't really go wrong with any of the islands, but Kaua`i might be a good choice for you. it's easy to get to areas that are not developed, and the beaches are gorgeous. hiking areas would include Koke'e state park http://www.kokee.org/kokee-state-park
Kalalau trail on Na Pali coast http://www.hawaiistateparks.org/parks/kauai/napali.cfm

Kauai was my first thought as well. It just seems more peaceful and quiet than the other islands. But the Big Island of Hawaii has some nice places as well. You could try to locate in two places, one near the volcanoes, and one along the Kona coast somewhere.

I've not been, but sounds like Kauai closest fits your description. But I agree, can't go wrong, any of the islands you can get away from 'large resorts' and tourists just by your choice of town and type of lodging.

I'd also suggest Kauai, which is just so lush and gorgeous. Great hiking, great beaches. The whole island has a very laid back vibe.

Considering your preferences, I cast one more vote for Kauai. Sounds like a landslide.

Kauai sounds perfect and has several rivers that you can kayak as well as the hiking you are looking for.

Ditto on Kauai.
Thought/hope this video link might be worthwhile:

Once there, make your selection from the upper right side menu, then start with (imo) Aerials Kauai, followed by Beauty 1 & 2.
P.S. Don't believe mentioned, but you might want to consider splitting your stay between the Princeville/Hanalei & Poipu (or even Waimea) neighborhoods; all beautiful in very different ways and you'd only need to fight your way through the diabolical Kapaa traffic once.
