Have you seen the Northern Lights?

What a fantastic sight to see when looking north from here in Woodstock, VA just now. The shades of pink were awesome as the shape of the lights changed. The peak was about 6:45 EST.

Here in Alaska, we are used to them, and they can be spectacular. Due to the recent solar flares, we are having even more intense colors and patterns. It is an incredibly beautiful phenomenon. Last year, we had a bright red sky one night. My kids agreed that it was Mars-like.

ronkala,

Ohhhhhhh, you are all making me long to see them... living near the windy city makes it a "far & few between experience for us. The UP MI has always been our best viewing spot, but since we sold our property there, we've been in a drought.

I'm envious... lovely viewing to you!!!

Because of the massive solar flares of the last few days, the Northern Lights (also known as Aurora Borealis) are not only supposed to be spectacular, but also can be seen much further south than usual.

Best time to look is as soon as it gets dark.

Unfortunately where I am (in Canada approx. 300 miles north of Montana) it has been overcast so all I can see is cloud .

So please - let me know what they look like, what colours they are - and where you've spotted the northern lights over the next few days.

Thanks!!

We finally got clear skies last night here in Upstate NY and saw it. Very faint but there from about 6:15 PM to 7:00 PM.

I was walking the dog last night here in western New Jersey and couldn't believe the color in the sky. I ran and got my husband and kids and stood outside, on a lovely crisp fall night, and watched the sky ripple and dance with red and green lights. Amazing. The last time I saw the northern lights was many years ago in the northern area of Michigan.

We live in rural eastern PA. My son and I we driving from the woods we live in and when we came to a clearing we saw that the whole sky was a brilliant red with bright streaks. We quickly drove home to get me wife and other son. It was a spectacular sight! We lived in Finland for a year and never got to see the Northern Lights there and I am so glad we saw them last night. Will be looking again tonight. We saw them at about 6:40 to about 7:00

We saw them here on the North Shore of Massachusetts. My young daughter was afraid it was from the California fires. It was kind of eery until we figured out what was really going on. Then we were so excited. I never thought I would see them in my lifetime. Just beautiful. Hope it happens again tonight for trick or treating.

You people are SO lucky! On the news last night, the weatherman said we might see them here in mid-Michigan IF we did not get a cloud cover (which we did)! My kids who live up near the Mackinac Bridge see them occasionally, but unfortunately, I have never had the opportunity. Maybe tonight?????
