Dunraven Pass - the road north of Canyon Village - will be open until the end of July.

This stretch of the upper loop was supposed to be closed for the entire season, but contracting issues have delayed the planned construction. Good news for me, since I'll be there in less than two weeks!

Note that the road will be "in poor condition".

If the road is in poor condition, what kind of car should I rent? Are the Yellowstone roads paved or gravel?

They are paved but get damaged during the winter. It won't be so bad you can't drive a normal car down it and it's not a road you are going to be driving on for hours.
