Gals & Grandmas TX Trip
Need destination and activity suggestions for 3-4 day trip with Grandmas. Somewhere fun in Texas to see, shop, wine and dine. Seriously considering San Antonio. One Grandma mostly wheelchair bound. Thanks!

Hi Bronica, San Antonio is a great place to visit--we have fun, we have shopping, we wine, we dine. Though to be honest, I am not exactly sure how wheel chair friendly downtown is...specifically, the River Walk. I've seen people in wheel chairs along the river but unless they had a death wish I'm sure they didn't take the stairs which is what I always do. Of course, there are other things to do here besides the River Walk but it's a great start!

How about Salado, TX. It's less than an hour north of Austin on I-35. There are loads of B&B's (I recommend The Baines House). Check out www.touringtexas.com/baines I'm not too sure either how wheelchair friendly the town is, though. There's terrific shopping...lots of small, unique shops...not department stores that line Main Street as well as other side streets. Everytime I go, I end up with lots of packages. I feel their prices are very reasonable.
If you're into "city" life, then Salado is not for you. But for a wonderful "ladies trip" of shopping, wining and dining, then this is your place. Last time we were there, we enjoyed sitting out on the screened in porch at The Baines House...the weather was perfect.
My two favorite restaurants there are The Salado Mansion for Mexican Food. We love to sit out on the patio when the weather is nice. For a fabulous gourmet dinner, we love The Range at the Barton House...delicious!

Enjoy your trip wherever you go. By the way, I love San Antonio, too.

OK, so we are going to San Antonio to see the Christmas lights on Riverwalk. Has anyone stayed at Westin La Cantera or Hyatt Hill Country Resort outside of San Antonio?
Unfortunately, the Riverwalk hotels are sold out for our dates so now we are considering staying at Westin La Cantera or Hyatt Hill Country Resort. We can take a shuttle or limo ride to Riverwalk to eat dinner and see lights. Is there enough to do at these resorts during day after we are done sightseeing downtown San Antonio?

Hi Bronica--what is it you like to do? The Hyatt is beautiful, great restaurant (Antlers), really nice setting for relaxing, taking it easy. The Hyatt is close to Sea World, which will be closed and that's about it. La Cantera, which sits high on a hill offers great views and also has a wonderful restaurant, Francescas at Sunset. LC is closer to shopping areas than the H (unfortunately, the Shops at La Cantera won't be open until sometime next year) and is just off I-10 if you want to take a drive up to Boerne or Fredericksburg for some fun shopping, great food. You can easily reach downtown from either hotel but both sort of skirt the main activities of the city. I hope this helps.

Westin LC is lovely and is out in the open in the hills- beautiful environment. Full service place. I think you are much better off basing yourselves in a place like that rather than at the Riverwalk. With a wheelchair at Christmas time, riverwalk is goign to be rough w/crowds. There are many areas where the riverwalk gets very narrow and crowded. you might go there once and then decide to do other stuff w/rest of your time, and the Westin LC will be perfectly situated for other mini-day trips as described. Also, in SA there is a lovely Mexican Market w/a big famous restaurant (is it Mi Tierra?) w/Maricahis, and a market where Mexican items are sold. my husband and I picked up our Mexican nativity set there. Much more open than the Riverwalk for a wheel chair.
