Friendly Hair Salon in NYC?

My friend and I are having a girls' weekend in NYC this Fall. We're moms in our mid-40's. We want to get a great "New York" hair cut and color, but the choices are overwhelming. Looked at a variety of hair salon forums, allure.com, etc., but still confused. We need a makeover and good advice for our somewhat problem hair..and we don't want to be laughed out of the place or be intimidated by snooty stylists. Anyone have any recommendations for a friendly salon or stylist who can make our dreams come true??!

What is your budget?
I have never been to a salon where anyone laughed at a paying client. You have to have some self-confidence, else you will think everyone is "snooty".
Is your hair really laughable

It all depends on budget, I could name a couple of places , but they are not bargains. But you will definitely get a good NY hair cut & color.
Bumble & Bumble on 56th
Garren @ Bendels
Kim Lepine on Mad Ave ( friendly & unpretentious
Pierre Michel on 57th.
Good luck and have fun!

I have confidence, just shy. Hoping to find someone that can really make the best recommendation for ME, not just the latest Thing. I'd pay up to $100 for a haircut and $200 for color, in New York.

Try salon AKS. They really take time to find out what you like/don't like and have good opinions about what will look good on you and they're not snooty at all! Also Angela is great with eyebrows.

Well, Misha,
one of the owners of Bumble & Bumble is a friend of my husbands and I would recommend him, but I believe his prices are higher than the budget allows. He does have people working for him who charge less.
While the salons I mentioned might be considered by some to be the "latest Thing", these guys have been around for a while and know what they are doing.
Kim Lepine charges a little less, you might look into that salon...considering that many of the good salons in NYC charge $250 for haircuts.
It is sort of hard to be able to recommend something just for YOU considering we have no idea what you look like or require..but I think there are enough good salons in NYC that you should be happy with your makeover.
Have fun~

I'm a guy, so don't quote me, but from what I know from my myriad female "friends," your budget won't get you what you're looking for. Not even close, I fear. Perhaps save the cut & color for another weekend?

You can easily drop $400-$500 on color in NYC. How about combining your budget of $350 and going for a good cut? Or take the $350 and blow it on good health and beauty aids and a massage at Bliss?

Wait a second guys. It depends on what kind of color you want. My single process is less than $150 & my guy is the best & the sweetest. Occasionally he adds balliage (paints in highlights by hand) which adds another $100 or so. If you want highlights with foil (that lasts longer) that's more.

Misha, email me at [email protected] & I'll give you the info.

BTW, Pierre Michel was a zoo the last time I was there (over a year ago) and NOT a place for the faint of heart.

I understand there are now a lot of good, less expensive places in Chelsea & Soho. Doesn't anyone know about those? Also, aren't there "class nights" any more where some of the trainees at the fancier salons practice under the eyes of the pros at a big discount?

I am doing the same thing -- have been waiting for the trip to NYC in September to go to a NYC salon for a new look. I would suggest you look at www.NYCitysearch.com. They have lots of salons listed and lots of reviews by people who have been. I did this once a few years ago and went to TWODO salon on their reviews. It cost around $200 with tip for cut and color with highlights.

This time around I am trying the Anthony Prieto salon and expect to pay around $250 for cut and color without highlights and tip. I also plan to have a digital camera with me so that when I get back home someone here can reproduce the look.

I call the salon and talk to the receptionist to get a feel for the place. In both of these places the people had time for me and took a lot of thought recommending who would be best based on what I told them.

You can easily spend $300 - $500 from what I have seen on the web for the prices. I was interested in Frederick Fekkai but the cost was astronimical for me.

Hope this helps

www.nymetro.com often lists under Daily "Best Buys" or "bargains," salons that offer specials. Check th ewebsite--sometimes they are big name places with students working on your hair for muc cheaper.

I was going to reccommend "Bliss" until I saw your budget. I agree with the others, you are not goitn toget a top salon at your prices. I am by no means beign snooty, neith er am I rich, its just tha tit is New York! The salon I used to go to in Chicago was not "top of the line" but still a good salon. My haircolor was usally $250 and haircut another $100. I was visitign New York and have a friend who reccomended Bliss to me. It was fab but y jaw dropped when i got the bill - MUCH MORE THAN MY CHiCAGO SALON. You also have to remenber tht in NY the average tip for a hairstylists is 20%-25% as well. Even if you just got a $200 haircut, your tip would be another $50.

Thanks all ... Alexis823, AKS looks REALLY good, prices included...plus one of the top stylists and colorists visit my home city every 6 weeks, so I could "maintain" without a trip to New York! Kim Lepine is also appealing. I think I can get what I'm looking for with one of these two salons.

I remember back in college (79) I got a cut from a student at Jean Louis David in NYC. It was the BEST haircut I think I've ever had. At that time it cost me about $40. Imagine.
