fastest route Boston to LA

Are you coming back to Boston anytime soon? Consider flying and renting a car. To avoid the risk of hitting a blizzard if you are driving would be to go through Biloxi on I-10.
The other option is to ride the train switching trains in Chicago. Riding the train means not paying for hotel rooms and gas. The train rolls all night when you would be sleeping

Big snow storm now in Colorado will affect any plans you have. You're leaving tomorrow? Too late to book planes and probably trains, so if driving is your only option: go south and stay there -- not the quickest but the least risky. Go west of the NY-DC corridor, though -- get to I-81 and work your way southwest.

The train option: Lake Shore Limited (449) leaves Boston South station about 11AM ET tomorrow arrives Chicago Monday morning.
The Southwest Chief Leaves Chicago at 3PM CT Monday with about 5 hours layover. The SW Chief arrives on Wednesday morning.
If you have to be in LA before Wednesday morning, you will have to find a way to fly.
To talk to Julie (Amtrak) call 1 800 USA RAIL
Another option would be to fly to Las Vegas (cheaper) and rent a cheaper car there.
With your Amtrak reservation number and your credit card you can print out your tickets at any Quik-trak kiosk without waiting at the ticket window.

Um, since flying takes only about 6 hours and driving will take at east 4 or 5 days - one could certainly make reservations now and still get there by air. Not sure what the airfare would be - but if you consider the cost of 4/5 days lodging food and gas - there might not be a lot of difference.
