Fall Trip to New York

We are taking a fall trip from Oct 10-17 traveling from Ohio by car. We would like to base someplace with day trips from there. Interested in foliage, lakes, nature in general and would like to stay in a mid priced hotel, lodge or preferably midsized inn. Seems like the colors in the adirondacks might be gone. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd go to the Hudson Valley, where there's a lot to see, and fall foliage may still be around in the lower elevations. If you stayed someplace around Rhinebeck or even near Poughkeepsie you'd have lots of options for day-trips, but you might consider basing yourself for a few days in New York and a few days in the Berkshires in western Mass. so you get a bit of everything the region has to offer. Columbia County (north of Rhinebeck) is particularly beautiful in the Fall.

You might even stay in 3 different places so you don't have to drive so much to see the sights. You can save money by staying in mid-priced chain hotels rather than inns, but there are a lot of inns in the Hudson Valley area to choose from, Rhinebeck having some of the more expensive options.

You may want to start south in NYC and then drive north as Doug said. A great Hampton Inn just opened in Yonkers, Twenty minutes from Manhattan but not expensive.

There's not much to see in Poughkeepsie-- but nearby you'll get some great Hudson Valley sights like the Roosevelt house and nearby New Paltz is a small little town with cute shops downtown. If you'd like to do a hike in the area, check out Mohonk Nature Preserve.

October you say? Want Fall foliage? Just go to Central Park and you'll get plenty of it. No need for Berkshires or Vermont foliage.
BTW, go down to Brighton Beach and watch Russian women swim in the ocean topless or nude. Then get your laugh of the day as they walk around practicing their Kung Fu on dirty old men who snap photos of them.

You can drive, take the bus or train and then have a great weekend outing in the Mid-Hudson Valley, about 1.5 h north of New York City.
You can visit America's oldest vineyard OR winery, walk on the world's longest pedestrian-only bridge crossing the mighty Hudson River, watch art at the world's largest modern art museum, or eat delightful cuisine at one of the multitude farm-to-table restaurants owned by Culinary Institute graduates... the list goes on and on!
