Dining near Lincoln Center

We're going to a ballet at the New York State Theater in Manhattan in early January. We're looking for a late-afternoon feast! Anyone know a 2-, 3- or 4-star restaurant in that area?

The best restaurants within easy walking distance are probably Per Se and Jean Georges, but it is difficult to get a reservation at either.

What do you mean by late afternoon?? You may be able to get a table at 5:30pm.

Also good in the area: Picholine; Telepan

If you are willing to walk south, Le Bernadin is wonderful.

I am not sure which star system you refer to, but there is a vast difference between 2- and 4-stars using the NY Times rating system which is what most people refer to here when they discuss stars.

I agree that both Picholine and Telepan are great options.

Picholine is more elegant/formal; Telepan is more chic/casual (but by no means "casual").

Both offer exceptional cuisine.

I really like Picholine. Cafe des Artistes can be good.

You also might want to check into Cafe Gray at the Time Warner Center.

What do you mean by "late afternoon". Most upscale restaurants service lunch until about 3 and then close until they open for dinner at 6 or so. Typically only casuale places are open all afternoon.

So - what time do you want to eat? What budget/cuisines?

Agree that "late afternoon" can be problematic at most of the nicer places. Anything b/w 3-5 pm is a problem. If you're seeing Romeo & Juliet, it 2 1/2 hrs. so you'd get out at 4:30 and could probably wait til 5 or 5:30 to eat if you want some place nicer. Any of the places already mentioned would be good. I'll add Asiate in the Time Warner building.

If you don't want to wait, or are seeing something that gets out earlier, Landmarc in the Time Warner building is one of the few places I can think of that serves continuously.

Cafe Luxembourg is another.

Another idea is doing a fancy afternoon tea, depending on what time you get out. The Mandarin Oriental hotel in the Time Warner building would be good for that.
