Day Trip to Hilo and VNP-what is in this area to visit?

Hello All: I have planned a day trip from Oahu in early September, a Wednesday, and am trying to figure out an itinerary for the day. We are arriving at approximately 8:00am and are flying out that evening at approximately 8:30pm. Our main goal is to drive directly to VNP to enjoy the park, however, we are unsure what to do after that. I am anticipating that our visit at the park will last approximately 4-5 hours. We will not be taking any extensive hikes as my husband and I will be visiting with my parents who are in their 60's. Are there any other not-to-miss sites in Hilo or the surrounding area? Where would be a wonderful place for us to have dinner?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

you could go to the farmer's market in Hilo before the volcano, buy some fresh fruit for the day, head up to rainbow falls and boiling pots, then head up to the volcano. since you're leaving at 8:30, and you need to get to airport, drop off car etc, you'd need to be done with dinner no later than 6:00. I'd recommend Cafe Pesto in Hilo, on bayfront, good food, good views and you'll make your evening flight.

For dinner in Hilo, you might try Restaurant Kaikodo--http://www.restaurantkaikodo.com/
It is located on a lovely restored building. We had lunch there and the food was very good. And though this may sound strange, it had the most beautiful ladies room I have ever seen.

If you have about 75-90 extra minutes before your flight, Akaka Falls State Park, north of Hilo, is spectacular.
