Day trip from Nashville - Where to go?
We are an active mid-thirties couple visiting Nashville for a weekend getaway in November. We'll be spending 4 nights in the area and are considering leaving Nashville for an overnight visit to any interesting areas that would be reasonably close by ~ maybe 3-4 hour drive max. We don't mind driving and enjoy seeing local lanscapes and environments as long as they are somewhat interesting & pleasant to look at.
Wondering if Memphis & Graceland might be a worthwhile journey?

The Opryland Hotel is beautiful. Whether you stay there or not the conservatory is worth seeing. The dancing water show is nice too (waterfalls & lights with music). I would call and ask the times for that. While you're there, just across the way is Grand Ole Golf mini golf course. We have never seen one that compares to the 9 hole challenge course (par is comparable to most 18 hole mini golf courses).
There are also a number of show caves to the North...Nashville is less than an hour from the KY border. Some tours are more strenuous than others, but all the caves we've been to have been beautiful.
Have a nice trip!

If you like history, you might consider staying closer to home and spending a day in Franklin....house museums, civil war sights, historic "quaint" downtown, upscale shopping.

Memphis & Graceland are worth 2 full days. I would recommend going, Memphis has a great small downtown, lots of history, music & great BBQ. Graceland is a must, even if you aren't an Elvis fan, it'll give you an appreciation for the man, along with traveling through the 50's to 70's, where it's stuck in a time warp.

Jack Daniels Distillery and Sewanee University about an hour away.
I think the drive to Memphis from Nashville is boring. I find Franklin, TN very interesting and is a different feel than Nashville proper.
And of course going towards Jack Daniels and Sewanee you are in the mountains.

What about Fall Creek Falls?
It certainly meets the criteria for beautiful!
It has an inn so it meets the overnight criteria. (Check out the Sunday special- package includes standard room and full breakfast and beverage for 2 adults for $69.)
There is plenty of hiking for an active mid-thirties couple.
It is about 2 hours outside Nashville so it meets the distance criteria.

I am hoping to go there myself in a couple of weeks when I go to TN to visit my Dad.

Perhaps a trip to Chattanooga - various sights there as well as the Tennessee Aquarium - one of my favorites. It would only be a 2 hour drive from Nashville.
Fall Creek Falls is a great suggestion, too - used to go there a lot as a child.

I would think of Memphis as a destination, not an overnight trip coupled with a weekend to Nashville. I hate the drive from Nashville to Memphis and wouldn't want to do it for just an overnight visit - but everyone has their own ideas.

I agree with the posters above. Memphis is a fun and interesting city and you could easily spend a couple of nights there. If an overnight is the most you're interested in, you've gotten some great suggestions. Fall Creek Falls is great for scenery and hiking. Chattanooga has a fun downtown, and the aquarium is great. Lynchburg (Jack Daniel's) or Franklin would be good day trips.
And yes, the drive between Nashville and Memphis is... less than exciting.
