Corvettes at Carlisle - Aussie travellers
Hi Guys,
My wife (english) and I are heading to Carlisle in late Aug for a few days. We plan on picking up a hire car in Phillie and would just like to explore the area for around 2 weeks. We will then continue onto NYC, DC and Orlando. Any insight or recommendations would be great, we are both in our 50s. We plan on Lancaster but other than that just plan on making it as we go. Thanks in advance

You are vague as to the time frame. Is that "two weeks" a total of two weeks for all of your travel or are you planning to spend two weeks in Eastern/Southeastern Pennsylvania?
I assume you plan on attending the Corvette show in Carlisle as opposed to renting one, correct?

Sorry if vague, 2 weeks in Pennsylvania after the weekend at Carlisle. following that 2 weeks we have about a month to travel to other places of interest in NYC, DC, Orlando etc. Rental cars are easy to organise and inexpensive from my point of view, dont need a Corvette as I have a 73 at home. Looking for any ideas of must see locations as we plan to stay off the interstate highways and travel the "back" roads. Thanks again

I am not quite sure of waht your idea of a "must see" is but I'll go out on a limb here and say that if you going to be in SE Pennsylvania you might want to consider including some of the sights in the city of Philadelphia itself.
Also sights such as Longwood Gardens might appeal. So-called "Amish Country" is, IMO, a lot more interesting if you can get off the commercial artery that is Route 30.
Am sure others will comment so topping this for you.

Carlisle is a pretty town. Dickinson College is built mostly of local limestone. There's a small, free art gallery on campus with frequently changing exhibits. Good places to eat are Piatto (dinner only), Issei Noodle House, Cafe Bruges, and Helena's Cafe for crepes. The drive from Carlisle to Gettysburg through Mount Holly Springs and Biglerville is pretty and takes you through some of the apple orchards.
If you go through Biglerville, try to have lunch or dinner at Pomona's. It's the best place to eat near Gettysburg that's casual and not expensive. In Gettysburg Sidney's at Willoughby Run is very good but more expensive.

Some thoughts on PA and other places for you.
The Pennsylvania Capitol is a 30 minute drive east from Carlisle. The Capitol building is just beautiful and worth the short and free tour. Details at http://www.pacapitol.com/tours.html
You'll cross the Susquehanna River on your way there. It's been said that it is a mile wide and a foot deep. While that's not entirely true, it is an enjoyable place to canoe or kayak. See http://bluemountainoutfitters.net/ for options.
On your way east to Philadelphia you can tour Lancaster County. Having grown up around the Amish and Mennonite Community, I haven't ever gone here for any kind of old world experience but if you are so inclined you might check out http://www.padutchcountry.com/index.asp Lititz is a lovely town in this area if you are looking for a small town America thing. http://lititzpa.com/ If you go, make sure you get some Wilbur Buds (think Hershey Kiss but better).
Pennsylvania also means Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

Off topic but since you are a corvette guy, you will only be a 10 and a half hour drive from Bowling Green Kentucky and the Corvette Museum and factory. I found the museum a little dull but they picked my little one out of the tour group and let her "give birth" to a corvette by starting it for the first time while it was moving down the assembly line. They even gave her a certificate to remember the occasion by... priceless.

Since you mention Orlando and that's a two day drive, maybe you love to drive. If so check out the Dragon! It's on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina. The website is mostly dedicated to motorcycles but car clubs love the Dragon too. I can vouch that the roads are fun in an SLK 350 or hanging off a rental motorcycle. I didn't find any luxury car rentals in the area in my very quick search but perhaps you could contact the Corvette Club of America and see if they could direct you. All the roads in this area of the United States are fun, fun, fun (curvy and hilly). It's fun just to stop somewhere and watch all the bikers and sports car drivers motor by.

The Fodors NYC forum is very active. You can find almost anything by looking through earlier posts. I've had great success with their recommendations.
Best of luck and happy travels to you and yours.
