The North Shore of Lake Superior in MN is also very beautiful. Do not miss Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls State Park, Grand Marais, Grand Portage, Two Harbors and Duluth MN. GM is a beautiful little town on the lake and it has mamy shops and lots of art. Do walk the lake walk in Duluth and visit Canal Park and see the Ship Museum. All in all a beautiful area. Have fun!!

Both of the above posts are good suggestions.
My favorite part of the drive is from Thunder bay to Marathon along the northern part of Lake Superior. Here you will find Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, Ouimet Canyon Provincial Nature Reserve, and Neys Provincial Park.
Also the drive from Wawa to Batchawana Bay along the east side of LS is great. In the Lake Superior Provential Park check out the pictographs at Agawa Rock. The Coastal Trail and part of Highway 17 hug Lake Superior’s rugged, rocky coast through this park, offering spectacular, unimpeded views of the legendary moody blue waters.

Perfect timing for this trip, BudgetQueen. DH and I did this BC [before children]. DH says to include the Porcupine Mts. in the UP, Apostle Islands in WI and Lake Nipigon in Ontario. There is a magazine available for planning in this area. I will track down the name of it for you.

Thanks to you all. This info is invaluable to a newbie. I've subscribed to the magazine.
If you can advise, how much time should I all for the drive, I'm also looking to add Lake Huron. I have 3 weeks, including time from NY.

That is hard to answer without knowing you. How much driving do you want to do in a day, how much relaxing time, how in deep do you want to experience things?
People do the trip in as little as 4 days. I don't think that very many would take more than 7 or 8 days.

BudgetQueen,
Yes, we just did Lake Superior. We like to hike and canoe, so those were top on our list.
Starting at the Soo and going clockwise, my favorite things/places are:
Whitefish Point - great place for birding as well as the Shipwreck Museum.
You can also stay in the renovated lighthouse keepers quarters.
Tahquamanon Falls - great hikes in the area.
Grand Marais - This is at the eastern end of the Pictured Rocks.
Munising - This is the headquarters for the Pictured Rocks. A boat trip from here is a must. It was just reported that a part of the Miner's Castle formation collapsed, but there are many others.
Marquette - The iron ore docks are interesting as is the Iron Museum in Negaunee.
Keweenaw Peninsula - Great place to explore the Copper mining industry. Brockway Mtn Drive is a must. On good days you can see to Canada.
Porcupine Mts. - If you like camping, this is a great place. Many hiking trails with super vistas.
Apostle Islands - This is one thing DH and I still have not done, but it is on the list.
Duluth - This is the farthest west you will go.
Grand Marais, MN and Splitrock Lighthouse - Wished we had spent more time here.
Thunder Bay, ON - Old Fort Williams will give you all the background on the early fur trade.
Sleeping Giant Prov. Park - A must do for animal viewing, especially moose.
Ouimet Canyon and Rainbow Falls Prov. Parks - Nice places to stop for a break and hike.
Lake Nipigon Prov. Park - This is off the main drag but well worth it if you like to canoe.
Marathon - You are near 2 Prov. Parks and a National Park. They are all worth a visit.
Wawa - You have to stop and see the goose. Near here are some magnificant falls.
Lake Superior Prov. Park - This is a favorite camping spot for us. If you like getting into the backcountry, this is a good place to start. The petroglyphs in the park are amazing but very tricky to get to.
The Soo - It is fun to watch ships going through the locks. This is best done on the US side.
Can you tell we like to hike, canoe and get out into the woods? That is the best part about this trip.

There's also a dandy B&B at Two Harbors in the lighthouse. Three rooms, and not even a resident keeper: Someone comes in the morning to cook the breakfast! There's a web site: I believe it's www.lighthousebb.org .
