Despite the rep, I find more "cheap" places to eat in NYC than other cities I travel to. There's an interesting little diner on every corner in Chelsea, Union Square, the Village. And the best street vendors/street food in the U.S.

Chipotle is a public McDonald's chain, which rarely if ever make the list.

While the article attempts to explain their definition of "cheap", I'd say it is different from mine.

While I love Lupa, for example, our recent lunch in which we split a pasta, ordered one entree each, skipped desserts and had a glass of wine each was $76. Don't get me wrong -- it was worth every penny, but not what I'd list in an article of "cheap" restaurants. Barbuto is a favorite too, and I think we spent more there than Lupa for a two course lunch.

Others are right in that there are many surprisingly good places all over the city that I would call cheap -- more in the $5 to $15 per person range -- possibly even with a glass of house wine.

Still the article made for interesting readings, and I'm sure some of them even fit my idea of cheap eats.

Agreed ... NY Mag often means "good value" instead of empirically "cheap."

NYC has "cheap restaurants," but it also has many places where you can get a $200 value for $100.

ALso, many of the restaurants mentieond are not in Manhattan. There's some great value if you are willing to go to Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx.

Wholeheartedly agree that many of these places are a good value, however, not necessarily cheap. Just posting for a good reference. I'll definitely print this out and hang it on the fridge!
