Charleston, S.C and a teen boy
We will be in Charleston July 17-20th with a 15 yr. old son. Where should we stay and what sites should we target? We will be going on to Vero Beach, Fla. and don't want to spend all our $$$ in S. C. but want to have a good time too!

Where to stay? Historic District would be my first choice. We've stayed at the Indigo Inn, and it was nice--not too fancy but comfortable (and a good location).
What to see, especially for a 15 year old? First choice would be Patriot Point, across the Cooper River from the Historic District. It has a collection of WWII ships that you can tour, including the USS Yorktown (aircraft carrier), a submarine, and several other ships. The Yorktown was great.
There is also the new state aquarium. Have a great time. Charleston is a wonderful city.

15year old would most likely rather stay at the Hilton Patriots Point. Pool overlooks Charleston Harbor and you can watch all the big cargo ships coming and going as well as the construction on the humungous bridge.
In addition to beach dweller, Fort Sumter Harbor Cruise. Aquarium.

and another thing . . .
GoTravel's comment about staying at the Hilton at Patriots Point reminded me that there is a water taxi that takes you across the river to the Historic District. The water taxi might be reserved for hotel guests, but I believe it was the Hilton we stayed at, and we rode for free with our room keys (easy 10 minute ride).
That would be fun for your son, and it allows you to stay at Patriots Point, easily access the historic district, and not have to worry about parking.

If you really want to stay downtown in the historic district, my choice for you would be The Mills House as they also have a pool. Otherwise, I think the suggestions of the other posters are perfect (I live in Charleston).
