I'm planning a trip to Charleston in probably August...I don't have more then a week, probably 3-5 days. Is that enough time? Any suggestions on what to see or do or places to eat or stay? Thanks in advance.

We were only there for one day on a road trip, but loved the guided tour. Try to get on one with a small group. We only had one other couple and got a special tour. Very interesting city. After the tour, you'll have a better feel of what you want to do while there.

Frank, go to the text search and just type in Charleston. You'll come up with all sorts of information to get you started on your trip. It's all recent, too, so you will get a good feel for this beautiful city.

It will be very hot when you go, so I would suggest a hotel with a pool. Even if you're not a pool person, you will need it! I shouldn't worry too much about having only 3-5 days. Once you see Charleston, you will want to go back again and again.

I would go on a horse drawn carriage tour and visit the house museums, go shopping till I drop, walk till my feet hurt, oh, you'll never run out of great things to do!

I honestly can't recall eating a bad meal in Charleston, or staying in a bad hotel. Maybe that's lucky, but I'm inclined to think that, across the board, Charleston rarely dissappoints.

Message: Just got back from Charleston yesterday! We loved it. We stayed in the historic district. There are lots of tours to take. We took the Harbour Boat Trip, the Magnolia Plantation Tour and both were great. The trolley is a great way to get around. The City Market is a must if you like to shop. We ate at the Hyman Seafood Resturant on Meeting St. the food was great. Lots to see and do, go to the visitors center first for brochures on the tours.
It was hot hot hot but I am ready to go again.
We stayed at the Lodge Alley Inn but wouldn't recommend it. Lots of better places to stay go to the internet.

Our adult kids just ate at Hank's and said it was outstanding. I had not heard much about it before that. Do NOT eat at Hyman's--you will have a real chance of a bad meal there. Go to a plantation--we prefer Middleton. An informal place to eat in Mt. Pleasant is The Wreck--good coastal style seafood and liked by other adult kids in the family.

I would stay at the Elliott House Inn- it comes with continental bkfst delivered to your room on a silver service..has free bikes to explore the Battery area....is right in the middle of everything near the old market....

and best of all, has a HUGE jacuzzi under a grape arbor that is NOT heated in the summer-bring a bathing suit because Aug.in Charleston is like living below the equator--the heat is stifling.

Have dinner at Magnolia's or Robert's Place....

Second the Elliot House recommendation! It is our favorite, too. Bikes are fun, palm-studded courtyard with hot (or non hot) tub and little cafe tables set all around, and wine and cheese reception every night. And the location can't be beat.
