Catalina island

Interested in staying in a hotel on Catalina island. Any recommendations? Are there any specials for the ferry? We want to go on October 11, 2014.

I love Catalina.
The only special I know is free travel on your birthday.
So different than Southern California metro area, like a port on the Amalfi coast.

That is a holiday weekend so any discounts would be pretty unlikely. What is your budget?

Ferry fare isn't much different from fares on ferries to other "vacation" islands like Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket. It is a fair distance - 26 miles.

Ouch. You don't have a hotel for this Saturday...?

It's late in the season, but you might be out of luck for the better places. $300 a night could still get you a reasonable place.

Start calling places like the Metropole, the Pavilion, the Villa Portofino, the Vista del Mar-- the better joints on Crescent. If you're not fussy and just need clean accommodations, I've stayed at the humble MacRae; you can do far worse, and they have been renovating and upgrading the facilities to more modern standards-- and their rates are great for Avalon.

The only special for Catalina Express is indeed the "free ride on your birthday" deal-- which we use every year for my mother-in-law. I love the ride over from Long Beach to Avalon, and if you're lucky the porpoises will be swimming in the Channel to accompany you on your journey. I hope you have a great time!!

Unlikely you will get a hotel room for a Saturday night over a holiday weekend. Most will not allow a one-night stay.

The only other discounts would be senior (55+) and child fares.

If you don't have a reservation on the ferry you may also find that the least expensive seats are sold out.
