There are many places to stay. What type of accommodations are you interested in staying? Hotel, motel, B&B? In town, outside? What is your budget? How many in your party? What ages? Are you going to have a car? Where are you going from there? Where are you arriving from? Arriving in the airport or driving in? What time of the night or day? Are you arriving in Burlington after a long maybe international flight? Is this a business trip or leisure? This is the most busy time of the year in the area hence be prepared that many places may already be fully booked. Give us a clue what are you looking for.

We are 4 senior adults and we will have a car. We will be arriving on a Monday and leaving on Wed. Either a motel or B&B would be fine. We would like to be within a 10 or 15 minute drive to downtown Burlington.

tjfc42, there are very new hotels in Williston which is about 7-10 minutes drive to downtown and mostly on route I-89. We stayed in all these Marriott's hotels when we had very early flight from the Burlington airport: TownPlace, Residence Inn, Fairfield Inn, Courtyard. The Residence Inn have the biggest rooms and full kitchens if you want to have your snacks refrigerated or make your lunch. The Residence Inn serves very good breakfasts which is included in a rate. We found rooms in the TownPlace a little tight and their breakfast was very simple. Courtyard does not include breakfast in its rate and if you decide to stay there make certain you ask for a room away from the highway if you are sensitive to a noise. Actually, the same goes for the Residence Inn. The Residence Inn and Courtyard are located next to each other. Fairfield Inn is on the other side of the highway. It is a typical Firfield Inn, nothing special with a breakfast but it is only a few years old and people who work there are always very nice.
TownPlace is located a little farther, maybe 3 minutes drive from Fairfield Inn. If you are thinking about four seniors sharing accommodation I suggest 2 bedrooms/2 bathrooms suites at the Residence Inn. It has a great access to I-89 if you want to take a drive and see foliage near Stowe and Montpelier. For availability I would go to wwww.marriott.com make your reservations very soon. When searching for hotels you may enter Burlington or Williston, they all are going to show up anyway. The end of September and the beginning of October is an extremely busy season in Vermont so don't wait much longer. Keep in mind these are just my recommendations and I bet other posters are going to suggest more places to consider. In the end you need to decide what place would suits you the best.

Visiting Shelburne Museum is a great idea. You need at least one full day. I think admission to the Shelburne museum is good for two days. However, I wouldn't recommend staying in Shelburne area, it is along route 7 and traffic can be overwhelming sometimes especially in October. It would take much longer to get downtown than from Williston which has better access not only to downton but to places outside such as Stowe and Montpelier.

I just went to the Shelburne Museum on Saturday for the Ticonderoga's birthday celebration. Havent been there since I was kid....it's fascinating. Definately go there if you can. To confirm what was written above, your tickets are good for 2 days.
In addition to the Williston hotels, there are plenty in South Burlington as well. The Doubletree, Sheraton, Hawthorne Suites, Best Western Windjammer, Holiday Inn, and the Anchorage are all 5-10 minutes from downtown.
