I found this on MBTA - Bus 459 for Salem Depot via Logan - Terminal C to Lynn Commuter Rail Busway. Take Newburyport/Rockport Line –Rockport to Salem Station - this sounds all good to me but having never been there before any tips so we don't get lost??

Am I reading this to mean that from Terminal C at the airport we will get on a bus (459) and take it to the train station and then get on a train to Salem? The total ticket is just over $5 - I assume we will need correct amount for bus and then train.

And then the same way back, right? We are staying at the Hilton at the airport the night before we leave.

Would it be less hassle to just take the bus from Logan into Salem? Our flight arrives at 1 p.m. - There are five in our group and each will have one carry on -

Well, using only the bus takes 20 minutes longer. But it costs $3 less, and you don't have to worry about missing the train (commuter rail does not run all that frequently).

The bus might drop you closer to you hotel in Salem as well, which makes up some of the time savings the train would have.

I agree with cranachin on both points.

It is a longish ride, but you will see some places that about 99% of tourists will never see.

Because the bus goes right down the middle of Salem, you are likely to be within easy distance of your lodging. Print out a map showing your hotel, and show it to the driver. Ask him/her where to get off.

Make copies of the schedule for yourself and remember that the schedules are slightly different on the weekend.

I don't know if you ride busses a lot at home but in Boston, "long distance" passengers, esp those with luggage, are encouraged to ride toward the back so local passengers can get on and off more easily.

No I don't use public transportation at home - I have used it in London and NYC - but it always is confusing to me.

Can anyone tell me IF MBTA have bus OR train service from Salem to Logan Airport on Sunday? Also I am confused about inbound and outbound. When I am leaving Logan to Salem is that outbound and when returning to Logan inbound?? Thanks in advance and I know these are likely silly questions but I live in a small town and we just don't have public transportation.

Taking any combination of public transit will involve at least 2 transfers.

The simplest way to go would be to take the 450W or 455W bus to the Wonderland T (subway) station, ride the T's Blue Line to Airport Station, and then take the shuttle bus to your terminal. That generally would take between 1 and 1.5 hours.

If you opt to include commuter rail, it might or might not be faster (the minimum time I saw was 51 minutes). It is more expensive that the bus/subway combo and also involves 3 transfers rather than 2. The train (commuter rail) doesn't go to Logan; you have to include bus or T (subway).

Taking only the bus is not very practical unless you have 2 hours or more to spend getting to the airport, and it also involves 2 or 3 ransfers. There is a weekday bus (459) that travels between Logan and Salem, but it does not run on Sundays.

Here is the link to the MBTA website for a trip from Salem to Logan Airport. You can substitute your address in Salem to get more specific instructions. You will also need to enter the date and time you will be traveling.

If you elect to take the train, put Salem Station as your starting point on the MBTA route planner page (and be sure to allow extra time to get from your lodging to the station).

Going away from Boston (such as Logan to Salem) is outbound. Going toward Boston (such as Salem to Logan) is inbound.

I realize this is a long shot but wondering if the week MBTA pass covers Salem? I know it's for zone 1A but can't find map for it.

would it make sense to buy the week pass when we arrive into Boston on Thur - use it as far as we can to Salem (would this be North Station?)and then once we come back on Sunday use it from North Station and for the full day in Boston on Sunday? right now the ride from Boston to Salem is $4.20 and then $11.75 coming back....

ALSO "A $3.00 surcharge wil be added to tickets purchased on-board all trains departing from North Station, South Station, and Back Bay Station. Monday-through-Friday customers will be charged $3.00 surcharge by the conductor when a ticket is purchased on board from a station with an MBTA ticket vending machine or where a Ticket Vendor is open. to avoid this charge we need to get tickets from a vending machine??

REMINDER! I am not someone who uses public transportation so be gentle - I'm using MBTA trip planner and looking at bus schedules and just a bit confused - we will arrive to Boston on Delta (terminal A) on April 2 at 1:50 pm traveling to Salem - the trip planner is saying to take the 459 to American Legion and then the 450 on to Salem - doesn't the 459 go into Salem also?? Yes it might get there a few minutes later than the 459 but not having to get onto a different bus might be nice.

Yes I know I am getting a little OCD with and I really do love the planning part of traveling.

this is the plan - I have found a map of Logan and found where to get to the Silver line etc.... looks pretty straight forward - is this the most logical route?? and I will be going with your suggestion for the route back Cranachin - cheaper!! Thanks so much - I truly appreciate all the help!

If you take the 459 bus all the way to Salem rather than changing to the 450, you will add some time to the trip but save having to change buses. Just tell the driver where you want to go and ask which stop to get off at (you might have to walk a little bit to get to your final destination from the bus stop, but less than half a mile, and maybe even less than that).

If you take the bus you will not go to North Station on the way to Salem. So you will not need the week pass at that point.

In addition to the Silver Line SL1, you can also take the Massport shuttle 11, 55, 66, or 88 from Terminal A to Terminal C to catch the 459 bus. Do NOT take the 22 shuttle, as it does not stop at Terminal C!

This is not in any way meant to be mean, but if you were paying yourself at minimum wage for the time you have spent trying to answer these questions and some of your earlier ones, you could take an airport van or even a limo to Salem and back.

Please note, the weekly link pass does not diversionary Salem. It is for Boston and areas very close to it.

As for inbound an outbound .... outbound means you are travelling away from the center of Boston and inbound means you are travelling toward it.

Logan to Salem is "outbound", Salem to Logan is "inbound". Logan to the center of Boston is also "inbound".
