Big Sure in June
Hello
Hope somebody can help me out here.
I was planning on visiting the Big Sure in June, but now I've read that the Big Sur was hit by a fire and got damaged by landslides. They're closed now, but will re-open in May.
Would you still advice me to go there in June or will it not be worth it because of all the destruction? Does anybody has any idea?
Thanks in advance!
Jeanique

Jeanique, do read Austin Traveler's recent post regarding Big Sur. Damage from storms means it may be a year or more until the area is fully open. Land slides, bridges closed, make plans to visit somewhere else in June.

Forget about the fires (which didn't actually affect the scenic bits most visitors go -- mostly in the 'back country)
BUT the highway and a major bridge have been seriously damaged by recent storms and it could be a year or more before you can travel down through the region.
There is a LOT you can see and do in Carmel/Monterey -- but Big Sur won't be one of them.

If this is part of a longer trip, driving down the coast or similar, you can definitely see Monterey and Carmel, and go down into Big Sur a little ways to see some of the dramatic coastline. Then south of Big Sur, there are beautiful areas around Cambria and San Simeon that are open also.

Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge is 27 miles south of Carmel on Hwy 1. The bridge will need to be replaced which could take a year or more. Between Carmel and Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge, you can see Point Lobos, the west side of Garrapata, Bixby Bridge, tours of Point Sur Lighthouse (only certain days of the week) and by June, hopefully Andrew Molera and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Parks will have reopened so there are still sights to see heading south from the Monterey Peninsula but you'll need to backtrack north on Hwy 1 to 68 east to 101 south which is an inland route to continue south. There's plenty of things to do on the Monterey Peninsula so you could still spend a few days here.
Traveling south on 101, the next point where you can access the coast is by heading west on 46 to Cambria. From Cambria you can currently travel north on Hwy 1 to Ragged Point so you can still access the elephant seal rookery and Hearst Castle.
So you can see parts of both the northern and southern ends but not all of the coastline through Big Sur but this will require backtracking on either end so does take extra time.
See this map for where the current closures are https://www.facebook.com/PfeifferBig...type=3&theater

Yes it will be harder to negotiate roads, find parking, etc in an RV in Carmel and Big Sur. Also RV parks around here charge upwards of $80 a night in summer. There are RV sites at Pfeiffer Big Sur but it isn't a guarantee that the campground will be reopened by June. Laguna Seca has less expensive RV camping. It's off of Hwy 68 and inland but not too far to access the Monterey Peninsula.

Well, scratch Pfeiffer Big Sur off of the list. This was just posted on their facebook page:
Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park will likely be closed through June and we hope to be able to open for camping July 1, 2017. This could change pending potential continued winter storm damage.
