Small midwestern family with 6yo, traveling in Mid-march for a few days to explore, see nature and reintroduce ourselves to that bright orb-thingy that used to give off heat. Thinking about setting up home base in Sedona and taking a day trip to GC. I'd also like to see a ghost town, gaze at the stars and see some paleolithic art. It will be our first time to the GC so should we spend the night and explore it (especially since the 6yo will not appreciate just staring) Any other kid-friendly must do's? Thanks

Jerome may do for a ghost town, and the main street of Williams (just south of the Grand Canyon) is a blast-from-the-past stretch of Route 66.

Not far from Sedona is Montezuma's Castle, a ruin of a Native American Dwelling. There are several places in the area to see rock art also.

I would spend the night at Grand Canyon if I could get lodging (try Yavapai if the other lodges are full, but people do reserve a year ahead and then cancel at the last minute). Do hike down into the canyon a way on Bright Angel or South Kaibab trail.

Be aware that there is a chance you might not be escaping to warmer weather. Mid March can bring snow and cold to the Grand Canyon which average elevation is about 7,000 feet. Even Sedona is 4,500 feet.

A trek into the canyon is a big task for a 6 yr old. Maybe a mule ride down. Big stuff for a 6 yr old. I always say the canyon is best enjoyed from the rim. One evening for a sunset and the next morning for a sunrise and then you've seen it all.
