Affordable NYC Lodging in August
My husband, myself and 21 year old daughter will be in NYC in August and are looking for affordable lodging(cheap) that is centrally located and safe. It doesn't have to be fancy, just safe and clean. Any ideas? It is our 1st time there and we will be trying to do some of the top touristy things. Any suggestions? Thanks, Lisa

Agree that it's very hard to help you without a dollar amount. Since prices here differ what you think is affordable may not be realistic. (Someone recently was looking for a "nice" room for 4 for $80 - in high season not to be had within hours of the city.)

How's $1,500 for the month. I just stopped by the Harlem Historic Guest House, just up the block from me, and you can get a room with private bath for $1,500 for the month. The hotel is VERY close to transportation the A and the 1 trains and a few restaurants close by. The street is a tree lined block of brownstones, and most have been rennovated or are being rennovated. You are 20 minutes on the train to Times Square.
Let me know if you want the phone number and I think there is a website will have to remember where, and will post back.
Hope this helps.

I wanted to correct my other post the name on the Guest House is the Harlem Landmark Guest House, (and it's not really in Harlem, it's in Hamilton Heights).
The phone number is (212) 684-8800. I actually went and checked it out for another fodorite and it is quite cute, pretty rooms, nicely decorated with ceiling fans and AC.

With a little homework on betterbidding.com and biddingfortravel.com you could try for 2 rooms on Priceline.
Some people here have used the Wolcott and have had no complaints, and I have heard good things about the Grand Union. These are NOT fancy properties but might fit your criteria.

$200 on a weeknight will not get you a room suitable for 3 adults. Weekdays have higher rates as business travelers fill the rooms.ALso many hotel rooms are tiny and only allowed to have 2 people due to fire codes.
Travelzoo (www,travelzoo.com)has some NYC deals like the Roosevelt hotel for 199 per night (plus 14% tax) for a room for 2 people. I think they may have larger rooms a disocunt too
If you try Priceline (for 2 rooms) you will probably need to budget at least 300 per night

Yes. Give a call and talk to Terry she is the owner and see what kind of a rate she can quote you. She actually showed me 3 rooms and baths and though it is a walk up to the rooms (hey we all need exercize), I thought the place was quite nice. It feels very homey and I think they also have a couple of suites. Right now there is a theatre group staying in 6 rooms for the month and they have a total of 12 rooms so you would have to call and see if they have anything available for your dates of travel.
Good luck.

I'm visiting NYC this August and when I looked at the various sites to book hotels, most of them were way over $300 a night.
What I did is go through www.hotwire.com. I've used this site many times before for hotels. You choose a date, the neighbourhood, a star rating, and they give you the price. The only thing is that they tell you the hotel after you've booked, and the complete price of the stay is charged at that time and non-refundable.
I ended up getting a room with a king bed at the Parker Meridien (4 stars) in midtown for $255 a night. They'll also provide a rollaway bed for $30 a night for extra people.
That still sounds mighty expensive to me, but by NYC standards it's cheap I hear.
There were also deals for 2 and 3 star hotels for just over $200 a night (wouldn't go any lower than that or you might regret the place you end up in).

I just booked a reservation for the last week in July/first week in August at the Belvedere Hotel in Midtown. It was referred to me by a friend. They are currently having a promotion for certain dates for $199/night (plus tax, of course) and it includes breakfast. Check it out online. I was told the rooms were clean, had a small fridge and microwave, and has a great location.
Good luck!

On quikbook.com On the Avenue is $199/night (plus tax) for 2 double beds.
There's a special on Travelzoo for the Roosevelt Hotel for $199/night (plus tax) for 2 doubles for your dates (and it includes contintal breakfast for 2). It must be booked by June 29 but is fully cancelable 24 hours prior to the arrival day by 4pm.

On the Ave is a smaller hotel near Lincoln Center just above midtown on the upper west side. The Roosevelt is midtown. Both are nice.
