2 college kids to amuse-one animator, one finance major

Hi! My hubby and I are planning to take the kids to DisneyLand at or kids' request in a few weeks. We'll be driving there from AZ. Our kids are both in college. Our daughter is an AMAZING designer, freehand artist, programmer, and just starting to learn animation. She's also freakishly obsessed with Disney, and animation in general. Our son is freakishly obsessed with business and finance, workflow, operations...don't ask. (Hubby and I are techies and have been entrepreneurs.) We'd like to get into a behind the scenes tour in Anaheim, and then maybe some cool animation studio or production companies in Burbank/L.A. But, not the usual touristy choices. Does anyone have any ideas or connections I can leverage so my husband can freak them both out and inspire them for a lifetime? Much appreciated!!! Love, Erika

It might help to state your budget? The behind the scenes tours I've heard about are generally $$$$$.

I don't think you'll have much luck with connections here. What I'd do is sift through the Disney blogs and the Disboards and the animation blogs. Geeks tend to congregate, and Disboards people are unbelievably obsessive. I've seen posts from folks that have no problem with dropping hundreds of thousands of dollars at the studios or parks for "special events". But you don't see much Disney fanaticism here.

But for your daughter- if she like anime (Japanese animation) little Tokyo has some really cool shops. And la county art museum has some amazing design oriented art.

Maybe this is like asking "What's a weekend?", but ... what is a dishboard?

Actually there is one Fodorite who must have some in's w/ Disney (dined at Club 33 more than once if I remember correctly) Hopefully s/he will see your post.

But AFAIK they do not offer any behind-the-scenes access at DL/CA - Their philosophy is to 'preserve the magic'.

If your daughter finds herself in San Francisco, the Walt Disney Family Museum would be right up her alley.

Not in the least cheap, but there are some upcoming D23 events next month:

Otherwise studios open to the public are Warner Bros, Paramount and Sony.
