I've been on my own many times in
Rome. I highly recommend Fiaschetteria
Beltrame, via delle Croce 39 (a few
blocks from the Spanish Steps). Not
only does it have delicious, simple
Roman fare, but also a communal table
in the back so it's more comfortable
for the solo traveler and a few outdoor
tables. Go early - it gets crowded
quickly since people in the "know"
flock here.

I have found that solo dining is quite routine in Italy. IMHO, there are an abundance of choices where you will feel comfortable.
Trastevere is a great neighborbhood to wander. Lots of outdoor eating spots with great people watching!

I was there last Aug travelling solo and had a great time at Entoceria Antica (sp??). It is located somewhat near the Spanish Steps. It is a wine bar with a good selection of food, you can eat at the bar and I ended up meeting quite a few interesting expats, locals, tourists etc.
