I am making arrangements for myself in Rome, my first visit there in 25 years. I'll be meeting up with Italian-speaking friends later on the trip, but the first 3 nights I'll be on my own. This will be in mid-April, and I know rooms are scarce.

Has anyone stayed at the Hotel Navona? Reviews say it is reasonable, clean and of course in a great location. So far, it is the only hotel available in my range (under 150 euros).

If I am near Piazza Navona, do you have restaurant suggestions? I'm a comfortable solo traveler but speak no Italian, and LOVE wonderful dining (that's where my budget goes).

guidebook writer's tips:
-All restaurants in the Pza. Navona area will cater to English speakers so dont be worried about being understood, but as a single female dining alone you will probably be stuck at a tiny table near the toilet.
-Why not check out alternatives such as a residence, apt. or B&B where evening meals are served.,,perhaps in Trastevere.
-On slowtalk website , see if there are any getogethers of likeminded travelers during your time in Rome.

As a solo female, I loved the Locando Senatorum. It is halfway between Piazza Navona and the Pantheon. I was able to be at either location in less than 2 minutes!! Room with bath was small, but decent price (in your range) and staff were lovely to work with.

I am not from Tbilisi but it is my favorite place in the world, so use it as my handle.

Any specific recommendations in Trastevere? It's the neighborhood I'd really like to be in most.

My last trip was solo and I stayed at Hotel Giardino Rome **. Great location, helpful and friendly owner, Katie. They have single rooms that are not too small and good size bathrooms. Typical breakfast, clean, cozy.

It's between Trajan's Market and the Quirinale. Great location for walking everywhere. 5 min to Trevi Fountain, 15 to Coloseum.

They fill up so you may be too late, but they do answer e mails promptly! My single room in Sept 05 was $95 E/nt.

I loved the restaurant they recommended nearby - Ristorante Schramburg on the vicolo of the same name.

Hi tbilisi - I took a solo trip to Rome and had one of the best times of my life! I don't know about Hotel Navona, but I stayed at Hotel Dorica for 4 nights, and I really loved it. I was very happy when I realized how central it was (close enough to the Forum, but also close enough to Trevi Fountain area). I paid 130 Euros a night.

I felt totally safe walking around in the area at night (until about 11pm), and the area had tons of romantic little restaurants on little side streets (yes, it felt romantic, even alone! I was in love with Rome!) Other bonuses: killer cappuccino at breakfast every morning; there was an internet cafe close by; the hotel was about a 15 minute walk from Termini; and there was this guy two blocks down who had a little stand with gorgeous fruit and bottled water.

I have to strongly disagree with vetralla's idea of solo dining in Rome! I have been there by myself 5 times and have never been stuck at a tiny table near the toilet! Of course, in Rome, most tables are small and close together. This is not really a bad thing. You often end up talking to people next to you. I definitely wouldn't want to be eating dinner at my B&B every night and don't think it's fun to cook dinner in my apartment if I'm alone. Much more fun to be out at a restaurant.
