Putting an ID label with contact on a U.S. passport

I recently did a DUMB! thing and it has made me think. I left my travel wallet with passport inside (I had traveled from the US to Canada) on the airplane. I was really lucky this time because it did turn up in Alaska Airlines "Left On Board" department at SEA/TAC airport. (Even though I flew into Long Beach, CA) It had to be sent to me FED-EX, they won't send it on a plane back to your home airport.

Anyway, A U.S. passport has no form of contact on it (this may be for security reasons, I realize) So if I had lost it separately from the travel wallet and it was not on an airplane, say in a city somewhere, how would a good samaratan be abel to get it back to me. I am curious if anyone knows if there are any legal reasons I can not put some form of contact (probably cell phone number) so I could be contacted in case it was ever lost again. Is it government property and putting a label on it would be defacing it or perhaps there really is security reason that it may be forbidden. I would like to know.

I'm not sure if this is what you are talking about, but my U.S. passport does have a page in it for contacts. They tell you to fill it out in pencil because obviously people move or their telephone numbers change or whatever. But there's a spot for my address and phone # and also an emergency contact. I'm assuming someone could use this to get it back to you. (?)

Check page 7 of your passport. As Sheepie states, this is the page with the space for contact information.

In any event, if the passport is lost with no other documentation, it will likely be turned in to the nearest appropriate embassy or to the local law enforcement office who will then turn it into the appropriate embassy. The embassy has your contact information.

Thank you so much. I do see the place for contact numbers now. I had not looked beyond the main page, MY BAD!

Don't feel bad, I never noticed (or filled out) that page either. Page 7, huh?

Wow. I never knew that either. FYI, suze, I just looked at my expired passport issued in 1997, and the contact page is on page 5. The contact info page on my new passport issued in 2008 is on page 4.

Lucy_d - mine was issued in 2003 and is one page 7... I guess we should just say "it's on one of the pages in the passport".
