I book hotels directly with the hotel, and plane tickets with the airline I am flying.

I like www.booking.com for hotels internationally because you can cancel at no cost, and in Australia (where I live), www.wotif.com is a good site for hotels. In Germany www.hrs.de is a good website for hotels.

Aside from kayak:

Planes: For Europe whichbudget.com and skyscanner.net.

Trains: I always check seat61.com first.

Automobiles: hotwire.com or enterprise.com (I don't drive in Europe but if I did autoeurope or gemut.com )

Hotels: booking.com and eurocheapo.com for anywhere, agoda.com for Asia, travelguru.com for India.

www.orbitz.com
www.cheapoair.com
www.hipmonk.com

www.agoda.com (related to booking.com)
www.biddingfortravel. com and www.betterbidding.com to deal with the blind bidding on www.priceline.com
www.wotif.com for last-minute hotel reservations; there are several more of this type.

PS: I should have added that I prefer to buy directly from the airlines but need the agencies sometimes to combine airlines. On the other hand I often find hotel bookers with cheaper rates than the hotels themselves offer.

I usually book with the hotel, but I have also used the famous Booking.com. When it comes to plane tickets, I search directly with the airline I want to travel.
