Hi all,

I'm thinking about upgrading my Canon Rebel, for which I have 3 lenses 75-300, 18-55 and a macro lens. I used my boyfriend's 50D when in India last year and the pictures were great, (not a whole lot better than my rebel though)- is there a step-up from that camera that you would recommend?

Always remember that, although good tools help, it's not the hammer, but the carpenter.

That said, he probably had a better quality lens than those on you rebel. Try his lens on your camera. If that makes the desired difference in quality, you can keep your familiar camera body an just upgrade lenses.

I think I'll be upgrading the base as well (to be totally honest, when I first got the camera, I was NOT nice to it unfortunately, so I'm truly in need of a better one!)

Buy the best lenses you can afford. They will outlast any body you buy, and are a good investment.

You can take brilliant photos with a phone, or a point and shoot, or the most expensive DSLR you can afford, or you can take terrible photos with them.
Know your camera, know the basics of photography, and develop the "eye". Won't matter then what you use.

Seriously, invest in glass, then the body.

The step up form the 50D is the 7D. It's a proam body but it still has a cropped sensor. If you want a full sensor, get the latest iteration of the 5D. The full sensor will let you use the lower end of the focal range.

The above advice is only applicable if you want to stick with Canon.

Getting better glass might be a better idea than getting a "better" camera.

I would rethink this approach if you are thinking about buying a full frame sensor in the future.
