Inflation in Argentina?

Heard inflation is very high in Argentina.

Checked the rates and it's almost 5 Argentine Pesos to $1.

When I visited Buenos Aires in November 2006, it was a little over 3 Pesos for $1.

So have prices of hotels and restaurants gone up a lot? I remember having good grilled steak for about $9 back then.

Airfares though are ridiculous. I had paid just under $1100 for Thanksgiving week back in 2006 and now, airfares are roughly double that much, sometimes more, sometimes less.

They do drop to about $1450 but still ...

Even after adjusting for currency fluctuation, you will find Buenos Aires much more expensive than on your last visit. Inflation has been approximately 20% per year. Bargains, if you find them at all, will require a lot more searching than back then. I checked the online price for a large pizzsa at a neighborhood pizzareria where I ate several times more because it was convenient to where I was staying than because it was good. A large cheese pizza goes for US15, or about the same as I pay for a large cheese pizza in the states at a neighborhood pizzareria.

Regular rates at the Sheraton Liberatdor run US178 for mid-Feb., per the site linked earlier in the thread.

Transportation from the airport now runs 180 pesos using Taxi Ezeiza. In 2006 the rate was about 50 pesos.

BA is still a great city. But more expensive.

Another point: don't trust the location description provided by the direct rooms, the site linked above. They list the Sheraton Libertador in Puerto Madero, for example, when the actual location is smack dab in the middle of downtown. There are numerous similar mistakes.

When I was in Buenos Aires in October 2011, I did not notice the inflation because the dollar was still good in value in reference to the peso.

If you are not on a budget, go and enjoy, and don't worry about the cost. Yes, certain products, etc. are up in many countries and cities today because of the world economy in general and the "pissy dollar"--but don't let that deter you from traveling and enjoying yourself.

Last October was my fifth visit to Buenos Aires since 2005.
