How to get to Punta del Este from BA ?

Hi everyone,
I love this website as you and your comments have helped me so much in the past , to perfect our trips..
We are going to BA this coming Januray for 7/8 days.We would love to do a day trip to Urugay , but I really wish I can visit Punta for a day..I was wondering if there is a way of getting there without having to fly? I was hoping that we can may be take the ferry + car/bus..is this too long to be completed in a day? We were hoping that we can go there in the morning and coma back to BA in the evening? Or if not possible may be you can advise us on a nice beach day trip to Urugay? Many thanks in advance for all your help.

I am pretty sure the ferries from BA only go to Montevideo and Colonia so you would need to get a bus/car. Montevideo is obviously closer and takes approx. 2 hours+ each way. Add on say 1 hour each way for the bus and that doesn't leave a lot of time there especially if you add on time for transfers etc.

We spent time in both Montevideo and Colonia and they both have beaches close by. We much preferred Colonia and IMHO this would be your best option. It is closer to BA, is a VERY pretty town and beaches are close by. We hired a golf cart in the town for a day to get out to the beaches and get around town. You could see the town and have some time on the beach in a day. We liked it so much we stayed 5 days!

Thank you so much crellston,
I think you are right that it will take us too long for a day trip to Punta. Thanks for the links and I must say that it really looks beautiful in Colonia and MOntevideo.I think we will end up skipping Punta for that as it probably will be too tiring to do..
I cannot wait to go ..just 10 weeks left..
Thanks again for the detailed advice.Much appreciated

Hello, in January , Punta del Este is at it highest season. It is indeed a pity you cannot alocate a little more time. Flying would be fine because there are several flights per day and takes very little probably less than one hour. That would be the way to go.
If you take buquebus you can buy from them a ticket all the way to Punta, so a bus will be waiting for you to take you from the ship to Punta. You can choose to take a ship to Montevideo or to Colonia. The distance is not that much , between Montevideo and Colonia the distance is 140 kilometers, and between Colonia and Montevideo there are 180 kms.
Punta is a very exciting resort, but I would venture that to have and idea and enjoy Punta, it is needed more than one day. Beach are a must, with lovely people, bars and restaurants built in the beach, very casual but with charm. People stay hours in the beach, sun bathing , swimming and people looking. Is part of the Punta life. have a great tine

Between Montevideo and Colonia the distance is 180 kilometers= 112 miles.
