Argentina- Fine Raised for Overstaying Visa
Not sure if this has been published on this site yet, but just so all you know the fine (multa) for overstaying your visa just got raised significantly- from 50pesos to 300pesos. If you are from a Mercosur country, it is only 100pesos. So, this might make some people rethink just letting their visa expire and paying at the airport, since now it is a much bigger expense.
Cheers!

Yes, tourist visas are for 90 days. Tourist visas are easy to obtain at any port of entry and easily renewed. Other visas require a more extensive application process and lots of delays and paperwork.
So many foreigners who plan to live in Argentina for long periods of time simply travel on a tourist visa...and either do not renew it at all or travel to Uruguay every 90 days...and have their visa extended for another 90 days when they reenter Argentina. Until now it was much less expensive to simply pay the nominal fine for overstaying the 90 day visa than to leave and reenter the country...

I'm tellin you, it happens more than you would think...That's the magic of BA!

Even it is difficult and "expensive" it would be nice if people who plan to live in Argentina for longer periods follow the law... I believe it is not as difficult as in, let us say ,the US, with quotas and all that. So for once I think that this time the Argentine Government did the right thing. I might be wrong ....

It takes 3 years to become a permanent resident of Argentina and it requires quite a lot of paperwork, money ( fees) and stress ... nothing really takes a couple of hours.. more like a couple/three days..and nothing goes smoothly :- )
To become a resident, there are many requirements that must be met, concerning money, etc .. you have to be here, you have to show up for the yearly renewal etc.
I cannot imagine someone deciding on a whim to stay longer than a couple of months..

Wow I did not know, but I do know that bureaucracy , and making complicated what could be simple is a characteristic of Argentina, unfortunately, it could be such a marvelous place...
I would venture to say that the bigger the Government is, all those public officials have to find something to do ( except for piqueteros may be)...BIG Government , for me such a negative situation.
