I am a U.S. citizen and I am wondering if I need a visa to travel to Argentina. The Argentine Consulate website says U.S. citizens do not need visas, yet elsewhere on the website, it says visas are "free of charge" for U.S. citizens. Also, I read in a guidebook that visas were needed. So I am confused. I called the consulate in L.A. but all I got was a message saying to check the website. I know someone who just returned can probably clear this up for me in a matter of seconds. Thanks!

It is possible that things have changed and I am wrong but when we came to Buenos Aires Oct of 2006, we just used our passports and customs in EZE airport stamped them..you have 30 days to stay as a visitor .. if you overstay, you will be fined at the airport when you leave.

As a visitor for a longer time, there might be different visas..we came on a residents visa so this is why I am not sure if things have changed in the past year.
But I don't think they have

I'm pretty sure you don't need a visa, because I know I hate the fact that I need to go through an expensive and time-consuming visa issuing process to travel to the US as an Argentine, but US citizens don't need one to come here.

That's one of the many things our Brazilian pals do better than we do. When the US started asking them for a visa, they reciprocated. We didn't.

No need to arrange a Visa in advance. When you arrive in Argentina your passport will be stamped "turista, 90 dias." You will also receive a tourist card that serves as a visa. You are supposed to keep the card with your passport and surrender it when you leave the country but there is no fine if you misplace it. Just pick up a replacement when you arrive at the airport.

Yes, 3 months..90 days is the visa limit.
A friend of mine just returned home from BA and had over- stayed her visa and did have to pay a fine.


We just finished the seemingly endless amount of running around/paperwork/bureaucratic nonsense that involves renewing a residents visa.. oy !
It is supposed to take a day- we got it done in 10
