We've found this one to be the most detailed but we hugely prefer a combination of the public transportation system (our favorite) with the occasional shuttle or internal flight for efficiency or because we're off the beaten track to renting a car. The smaller, laminated maps would likely be sufficient unless you're planning to go waaaay off the beaten track - to small villages in theh south, for example. Happy trails!

Ah-oh, I stink at keeping a travel diary but I'll try come up with something. This trip should be a kick. Our first trip was mostly spent zipping around Ambergris Caye in a golf cart with day trips to Lamanai and Caye Caulker. This trip will be spent in Placencia and Hopkins with a rental car for exploring. Getting out of rainy Portland, Oregon and spending time in a mellow, gorgeous beach setting is our idea of a vacation.
While staying in Placencia, will our closest gas station really be Dangriga? Then Punta Gorda if traveling south? I'm hoping this information is outdated and we will have a few more options.

We've never rented a car in Belize so I can't help you there. If you don't get the answers you want here you could try the Belize Forum since lots of locals and expats post there:

We lived in the Portland area for years and I grew up in the valley south of there so I understand about rain. We've lived in The Dalles for more than 20 years and are used to the <12 inches rain/year and 320+ cloudless days/year, but that doesn't stop us wanting to vacation in Latin America every summer. ;-)
