Water Taxi to Ambergris Caye
Does anyone know which Water Taxi service from Belize City to Ambergris Caye is best. Reliable, safe and comfortable, etc. Flying on a small plane is out of the question for us.
Thank you, Inor

If you've got the money, there's a private water taxi service that recently started up. It's about the same price as the flights.
There are three other water taxi companies. I've only gone from Belize City to Ambergris once or twice on them. I don't find them comfortable. My back is sore by the time I get where I'm going. That said, they're reliable, and seem safe enough.
When we first started traveling to Central American 10+ years ago, I was terrified of those small planes as well. For some destinations, they were the only options. Now, I love them.
Especially the flight over from BZE. The plane flies low enough, and the water is clear enough that you can sometimes see large fish and rays in the water. It's beautiful. Also, only takes 15 minutes.
To take the water taxi, you'll need to hire a cab, about US$25.00 to get you to the water taxi terminal.
Here's a link with lots of transportation info. There are links to all the water taxi companies.

Another option if you have a rental car (if this is the second part of a jungle to beach trip) is to park the car in the lot next to the water taxi terminal. (Pre-arranged with your car rental place, of course.)
We (seniors) enjoyed the taxi; no problems at all, even with a couple of big suitcases the first time.
We got to the terminal and just took the first boat leaving. They seemed to be of similar sizes.
Took the plane on the return, due to time constraints and simplicity of being left right at the airport, and that was also quite easy.

We have taken the ferry several times due to my fear of flying, and it has been OK. Now that I have tried the little flight though, I think it's kind of fun. Saw several bull sharks from the air last time.
Expense can be an issue and the ferry is much cheaper. We did get scared one trip though as the thing was quite overloaded. We always make a point of knowing where the life jackets are. We will do the ferry again, but not if we know the sea is rough and never the late one that would be out there after dark. No way.

We always fly. Just so fast and easy. The private ferry is relatively new.
I've taken the Water Jets Taxi from Ambergris to Caye Caulker. That boat did not have airline type seats. That boat would have continued on to Belize City.
It might just use the boat with the airline style seats between the Cayes and Chetumal in Mexico. That's a longer trip.

Thanks for all of your input. I'm now guessing all the boats are similar, but the private boat would not be over crowded. And while it is more expensive than the other ferries it is no more expensive than flying, and should not be that much longer than flying since it would take us directly to our hotel, which should save some time on that end.
