seeking Costa Rica Car rental advice

Air and hotels are booked for June trip to Costa Rica, car is next. Does anyone have experience using u-save car rentals? They are recommended by Tico travel. If you used them, how did it go? Is there another company that operates out of SJO that you recommend? Any companies to be avoided? Thanks!

Hi, I haven't used nor worked with that particular car rental service.

I've actually written an article about the car rental agencies and requirements here. All of them are in San Jose and have great reviews.

Hope this helps,

Tricolor is probably the most popular car rental place on these boards; you might try them. We usually get a private driver so no personal experience, but they get good reviews.

Rented from U-save Avanti they defrauded my credit card

double billing me and adding numerous small fraudulent

charges took me 6 months to get my money back and had

to close my card...AVOID

stick with www.tricolorcarrental.com www.wild-rider.com

We used EuropeCar and had no complaints. Reasonable rates and they upgraded us for free to larger vehicle. Tricolor does get a lot of positive comments on this board.

Hola Katniss,

Depending on where you are driving in Costa Rica you may want to rent a 4x4. We drove to el Castillo, Puerto Viejo, and most of the way to Tortuguero on extremely rough and poorly maintained roads.

Main roads taking you near those places were in good condition but the side roads getting you to the towns were potholed, graveled roads and some with creek crossings and log bridges.

We were thankful that we rented a 4x4.

Good luck.

Katniss, FYI - I booked our car with Tricolor for our June trip. They quoted me $365 for a week rental of an X-Trail. I had trouble reaching them via their website so if you want to contact them try Cynthia Segura at [email protected].

Hi Katniss,

I know nothing about U-save, but I did have Tico Travel arrange a Costa Rica trip for me a couple of years ago. They did a nice job and I had no complaints. They set up a rental car for me and I'm pretty sure it was through EuropeCar.

We drove a Daihatsu bego with Europecar, and it was a good car though it struggled a bit going uphill, which we were doing often. A for next time - we will go directly to the hotel from the airport and have the car delivered there. The van ride and wait for the car was difficult on a 6 year old after a day of flying, then by the time we were done for the day, it had been an 18 hour trip.
