Renting a car from Akumal to drive to Chichen Itza

Hi there, my family and I are going to be staying at Las Casitas in Akumal for the week leading up to the 21st of December. This trip is primarily based around being at Chichen Itza for that day. I kinda wanna take a tour so that were guarnteed admission, but I dont want to be on somebody elses schedule. Im not sure how easy/safe it is to rent a vehicle and drive to Chichen Itza. Has anyone done that?

Yes, my late husband and I always rented cars at the airport and drove all over and stayed in many cities (he was not a big beach person). We rented from Easyway at the airport. If you just want to rent for a day, pretty sure TSA no longer rents cars but you can ask, ABR does not currently have a car rental desk maybe check with Hotel Akumal Caribe. You might have to go the Puerta Aventuras or Tulum.

I recently read Easyway just opened a car rental place in Tulum near the new Chedruai but they do not have a lot of inventory yet so arrange in advance. Maybe they can bring the car to you (might charge extra).

Great place to stay I hear, only stayed at Hotel Akumal Caribe, ABR and condo in Aventuras Akumal myself.

We have done the Akumal to Chichen Itza drive a few years ago. It's a long drive thru some very rural areas, so make sure you have plenty of gas. The quickest and easiest drive is on the toll road out of Cancun which is not cheap. However it's quite safe, and I believe there are a few car rental places in Akumal. Your other option would be to rent a car at the airport so you'll be able to drive to Akumal and where ever else you may want to explore. The local mom & pop rental places like Easywway and America are MUCH cheaper than the big chains once to total in the insurances, and they are quite efficient. Las Casitas is beautiful.

The quickest way to Chichen Itza from Akumal is not on the toll road. It is south through Tulum. The road from Tulum to Chichen Itza has been improved quite a bit. I was just there in July and took a group to Chichen. I also rented from Easyway twice this past summer when I had folks visiting and had a very positive experience with them both times. Typically I do not rent cars any more but I would not hesitate to use them.
