I usually leave around $3 or 1,500 colones per day. I may round that up some if I've stayed there several nights.

Depends how many people and how messy you are

Depends on the housekeeping set up whether I tip daily or at the beginning and end of a stay.

We ask our house guests to leave about $1.00 US per day per person.
That's now about $11.4 MXN pesos pp/pd.

Thanks Mikemo for a good answer to a question I have been asking myself for a while. Thats a good benchmark for everyone to use. More or less may be called for depending on the situation. I remember our maid in Jaco in CR folding the towels into various shapes (birds and etc) to find when we returned to our room.

I realized after I posted that I tip exactly what Tully mentions. I gave 100 peso and the beginning, and 100 peso at the end of my trip to Mexico last week ($22 for 7 days). There was only 1 maid/staff at the hotel so I know it went directly to her.

I had a strange experience at two hotels in Costa Rica. I left tip money on the bed in the morning- as I always do in Mexico- and the maids left it. Made the bed and put it back. How odd. Is there a custom against tipping the maid in Cost Rica this way? Were they afraid to take the money, or perhaps offended? Anyone had a similar experience?

Maybe leave a note with the money on top.
A note that says Thank you or Gracias so that they know it is for them.
