drive time Arenal to Playa Samara

Has anyone driven from Arenal (will be leaving from Lost Iguana) to Playa Samara? Different sources have given me times ranging from 3.5 hrs to 6 hrs. Trying to decide if it is quicker to drive or to fly from Arenal to San Jose and then San Jose to Punta Islita and then drive 1 hour (or at least that's what I've been told) to Samara. Have to fly to Punta Islita because of connecting times in San Jose. Any help on this is appreciated!

We did Lost Iguana to Playa Samara in 4 hours at end of July. We liked having a rental car, and this drive is actually very comfortable. The last stretch after you leave the Interamerican Hwy, (onto the new road w/ the new bridge)is the best road we have travelled in Costa Rica. From what I understand of your situation, I think I would just rent a car, rather than back-track to SJO, wait for plane... Much more relaxing to be on your own time, and you can see much more of the countryside.

Thanks for the info. We can handle a 3.5 or 4 hr drive, but 5 or 6 wouldn't be our first choice. Don't know if we will rent a car or get a private shuttle. Did you need a car in at Lost Iguana (the hotel told me taxis to town are easy to get) or Samara? In Samara staying at Villas Kalimba which is close to restaurants etc.

Hello, best to enjoy your holidays is to take a shuttle. The new bridge gives now a shorter travel time. Villas Kalimba is close to beach and town. See loaction on www.costaricaweb.de

COSTA KLAUS HAS GOO INFO - I SEND IT ON TO OTHER WEB SITES (HOPE YOU DON'T MIND COSTA KLAUS). If you do decide to try a shuttle, my 50 yr. old husband and 18 and 21 yr. old children used Leo Rodriguez e-mail [email protected] and all loved him, he can drive and visit at the same time we could ask questions and watch the landscape for 4 hrs.! He is a young, clean cut surfer/college grad with his own business. Great driver, great wealth of info, pleasant, prompt, on and on!!! His phone number is (506) 378-0001. He is a tour guide also. Have Fun.
