car rental in costa rica
We are considering renting a car to take us from San Jose to arenal then to monteverde. We are deciding between returning it in san jose and then flying to manuel antonio versus driving from monteverde to manuel antonio and then back to san jose at the end of our trip. can anyone make recommendations regarding cheapest way/place to rent a car? also, given prices, roads, time etc, is it easier/cheaper to return the car to san jose from monteverde and fly to MA or should we just hold onto the car? thanks!

Once you have rented the car you might as well hang onto it. You will probably get the best rate renting by the week or longer. To drive back to SJ and mess around with another flight will take as much time as driving. From Monteverde to the Pan-Am highway is a short distance - once on the highway, its a fairly easy and interesting drive to Quepos/MA. Good luck and have fun!

Regardless of the condition of the road from Monteverde to the Interamerican highway, you're going to need to be on it to get out of there toward either MA or SJ, right?
I agree with DNCEE11 that you might as well keep the car. After all, you can't see the crocodiles on the Rio Tarcoles from an airplane!

I wouldn't bother returning the car. We rented one and drove it from just outside of San Jose to Arenal to Monteverde to Manual Antonio to the airport without problem. Granted, the roads at times are not the best, but they are all do-able! Poas Rent a Car is what we went with, and they drove the car to us, we drove it around for 8 days and dropped it off at the airport at the end of our trip. It was a small 4X4 and the entire thing cost about $320. Driving is part of the adventure!
