Daylight Saving Time in Nicaragua
For anyone traveling there in the near future, Nicaragua adopted Daylight Saving Time over the weekend, moving clocks ahead one hour. It's now one hour later than Costa Rica, but the same time as Central Daylight Time in North America. They will switch back at the end of August.

The government decided that with the high price of oil, they would try to take advantage of the longer hours of daylight this time of year in the hopes of saving energy costs. The thing is, this close to the equator, you just can't push sunset back that far, because day lengths don't have the wide variation throughout the year that you get in the northern U.S. Anyway, Nicaragua is trying it this year. I'd guess the sun will set sometime around 7 p.m. instead of around 6 like it does now. Nicaragua hasn't decided yet if DST will be an annual event or not.

This is not the first time and for some unknow reason it has never been effective. Something funny, people is always concern if appointments or others are at the new or old hour. It is all about educating the population, something that lacks in Nicaragua.
Lots of people are complaining that electricity is needed in the morning hours when it is dark and they need to get ready for work. Is a non win situation...for a 3rd world country, what a shame
