Costa Rica Reptile Viewing
We can't make it to the Serpentario because we are skipping Monteverde. Does anyone have any suggestions for another captive reptile (or frog) place similar to the places in Monteverde? We are visiting Sarapiqui, Arenal, and MA. Thanks!

There is one in Grecia, not far north of the Interamerican highway between San Jose and San Ramon. Haven't been there, have only driven by, but have heard it is a good place for viewing reps! Grecia is a cool little place to visit anyway, snakes or no snakes!

You might not want to know what is really out there!!!!! After going through the Serpentarium in Monteverde I was a little more skittish than usual about hiking. After not seeing most of those critters in the wild since that time, and believe me I was looking, I have since calmed down.

You'll also be passing the Snake Garden, 2 km N of La Virgen, La Marina Zoológica
W of Aguas Zarcas (mostly birds and mammals), and the Tropical Frog Garden 4 km E of Aerial Tram on the route you're planning.
That said, if you're interested mainly in snakes, I'd go with shillmac's recommendation of the World of snakes or the Instituto Clodomiro Picado (also in the CV, San Isidro de Coronado NE of San José which is a scientific institution of the University of Costa Rica that raises hundreds of snakes for antivenom production and research. The public is welcome.
