Baja California
Has anyone traveled the entire Baja - from Ensenada all the way down to Los Cabos?
Did you go on your own by bus or car, or on a tour?
Road Scholar has a bus tour with a pretty interesting itinerary, but with about 32-35 participants(!!).
We've only ever traveled with small groups and don't think we'd enjoy this many.
Any other outfits you've used or know of?
All comments and advice appreciated.

In '97 we shipped wrecked at Bahia de Tortuga making our way via hired auto to Visconia (SP?) at the Baja Sur/Baja Norte boarder then taking a bus the rest of the way to La Paz & on the Cabo. It is indeed a very interesting with lovely beaches, towns & interesting highland agricultural areas. The 12 hour trip was most enjoyable.
So go on your own taking public buses.

You were shipwrecked??? Sounds like quite an experience!
I just looked at a map. Was that El Vizcaino? That area looks very interesting! There's a Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Whale Sanctuary there.
Did you find lodgings as you went along?
We've driven from the US down to and up from and around Mexico City but that was a LONG time ago. The roads then were terrible but we were a lot younger too.
At this point in our lives, we'd probably want a set itinerary, even if we did drive on our own or go by public bus.

Roads on the Mainland have improved greatly with many excellent but relative expensive tool roads.
I am currently camping in California's Trinity Alps (will be here the rest of the Summer) so I do not have any of my maps or notes so I am dependent on my 71 year old brain.
The Highway down Baja is not bad but narrow so if you drive you must stay alert at all times. Driving would be a good option allowing you to stop where you want.

Did take this Baja trip with Road Scholar which was amazing!
there were 30 in the group (still too large for my taste) and the bus trip (of 1000+ miles) was grueling. But the land was wonderful and the remote villages and friendly people a delight so it was totally worth it.
Loved coming within touching distance of the gray whales - moms and babies, also snorkeling with the sea lions (at least the baby ones!)
Andiamo Tours does this trip for Road Scholar and does a great job.
