Wine Tasting / Bar in Paris

Greetings! I am returning to Paris in September and would like to do something that I didn't get to do last time.

Can anyone recommend a good wine tasting or wine bar? I've searched through several posts and haven't seen this issue addressed in regards to Paris. Unfortunately, we won't have a chance to out into the wine country, so we need to make it work in Paris.

Ideally, it would be a friendly, unpretentious place as well, since we are wine lovers but not necessarily experts...

For what it's worth, I've always found most Paris bars to have a very small selection of wine - normally with only one or two interesting things from the one part of France the proprietor has a close connection with to add to the usual clarets and beaujolais.

Willy's Wine Bar, though, (01 4261 0509) has a London-style choice, as has Juveniles (01 4297 4649)

Hi,
One of my favourite places to enjoy a glass of wine in Paris is the Cave des Abbesses, 43 rue des Abbesses, in Montmartre.
(I've mentioned it a few times before on this board although I haven't been there for a while as I no longer live in Paris).

At the front is a wine store, and through the back is a bar with a dozen or so tables. The wine-tasting menu features a selection that changes every month.

They also serve plates of charcuterie, pâtés, cheeses, olives, grilled vegetables, etc. that are perfect for sharing. In nice weather there are a couple of tables on the pavement which are great for watching the hustle and bustle of the busy market street.

The vibe is definitely unpretentious and relaxed, and you'll always find lots of locals there. They close the wine store at about 9, if I remember correctly, but the bar (if you are already in there) often stays open later - usually till everybody has gone home, whatever time that is!

Hi,

If I recall correctly, Nicholas is a chain of wine stores in Paris that has wine tasting on the premises. I haven't sampled their selection but have heard of them before and passed a store on the last trip - they had wine by the glass tasting selection displayed in the window. Here's the website:

I like the Taverne Henri IV- on the Ile de la Cité at the entrance to Place Dauphine on Rue du Pont Neuf.

It's a cozy little wine bar and the proprietor is friendly and helpful. Their cheese plates (ask for a small one) go nicely with the wine.

Here are some more from my list of places I'd like to try:

Willi’s Wine Bar (www.williswinebar.com, 01 42 61 05 09) 13 rue des Petits Champs in the 1st Arr. - is a cozy bar where English is spoken, small tasting glasses so that you can try multiple wines.

Le Rouge Gorge at 8 Rue Saint- in the Marais (01 48 04 75 89). Informal, reasonable wines by the glass.

La Tartine
24 rue de Rivoli (between the Bastille and Les Halles)in the 4th Arr.
Old, reasonably priced wine bar. with good Pain Poilâne sandwiches, Art Deco decor.
Open daily 8am-2am, 24 Rue de Rivoli
Tel. 01 42 72 76 85.

La Dernière Goutte, 6, rue Bourbon-le-Château , in the 6th Arr. is a wine store that has wine tastings on Saturday afternoons.

Enjoy!

In addition to wine bars, there is an elegant champagne bar at the Sofitel Dokhan in the 16th (metro: Victor Hugo). I believe they offer around 20 different types of champagne by the glass.

A second for La Rouge Gorge and a more complete address, 8 Rue Saint Paul, 4th (Metro St. Paul) on a pretty street in Le Marais near the Seine (across from Ile St Louis on right bank). We stayed in an apartment on that street which is quite charming and includes a number of antique dealers and similar shops, including the Red Wagon a bookstore devoted entirely to English language books (not that is why you come to Paris, but it was fun to see what they stocked, including a number of good guide and souvenir type books, as well as English language literature, current non-fiction books, etc.) Enjoy Paris and enjoy the Rouge Gorge.
