Which of These Venice Lodgings?

Since you've been so helpful with my Rome trip, I wanted to run my Venice options thus far. My husband and I will be staying 4 nights in early May 2013. Here is what I am looking at so far:

Locanda Orseolo
El Teatro
American Dinesen
La Calcini
Hotel Una

At El teatro we can get a room with a private terrace at a price lower than a room with no view at the Dinesen and La Calcini. But I know that B&Bs have their negatives and positives.

I've almost already talked myself out of Hotel Una as it is way out there but the hotel itself seems to have some nice perks.

Thoughts?!

Have you looked at Locanda Le Vele? We stayed in the room with the balcony over the canal in the main picture. Breakfast was included and brought to our room. The gentlemen who own it were very nice and the location was terrific.

Also, consider an apartment. We use them for visits of 3 nights or more.

We are Locanda Orseolo fans, after now 6 stays there. Room on the courtyard for quiet; room over the canal for view and spectacle. Love it. for us it makes the Venice experience.

Thank you!! I will look into to the Locanda Le Vele. And yes, Orseolo seems to get raving reviews and it appears to be in a very central location!

Of those you list I've only stayed at La Calcina (note spelling) - we really liked it and stayed 5 times (before moving on to staying in apartments and then actually moving here fulltime). For us it was the perfect location and a little oasis of quiet civilisation away from the madding crowds - but it has got quite expensive for what it is.

I have always seen rave reviews for Locanda Orseolo.

I tried to look up the others you list so I could at least comment on the locations.

El Teatro - do you mean Al Teatro or maybe Il Teatro? There's an Al Teatro near La Fenice which is a very central location, more in the thick of things than La Calcina.

The American Dinesen is in a very good location IMO, in Dorsoduro like La Calcina so that bit quieter and on a nice canal (have you seen their webcam?).

Una hotels are as I expect yuu know a chain, although the Venice one is obviously in a historic building. For me that's in a less nice area of Venice, near the very busy (and relatively modern) Strada Nuova.

I stayed at La Calcina a few years ago. Great location away from the mobs but the room was very tiny for the price. (As I recall, it was on the top floor.) Next year we have booked Al Teatro based on the reviews and the fact that we wanted to stay in a different area to expand our walking 'tours'.

Another boutique hotel you might consider - Oltre Il Giardino in San Polo. My husband and I stayed there for a week in early May - perfect in every way - if you are looking for a romantic, small hotel (6 rooms) with exceptional service in a peaceful garden setting. One of the best places we have ever stayed anywhere and we travel extensively. We liked this
hotel so much we are planning to return next year. Read Trip Advisor reviews - they are right on target. Locanda Orseolo was actually our
first choice but they were fully booked. Last January I happened to see some good comments on Fodors about this hotel so decided to take a chance. After dealing with huge crowds in San Marco so glad we chose this place instead. The San Polo neighborhood was convenient and a lovely area to explore. And for roughly the same price as a room at Locanda Orseolo you can get a suite at Oltre Il Giardino.

P.S. HIghly recommend La Porta d'Acqua Restaurant in San Polo - our absolute favorite - and Barber of Seville Opera performance at Musica a Palazzo - female lead sat in my husband's lap - memorable!

I always try to stay at Pensione Accademia in Dorsoduro. It has an almost cult following by people of all ages who remember the bittersweet 1950s Katharine Hepburn-Rossano Brazzi movie "Summertime"--still the most glorious film ever about Venice, by the way. The pensione where the Hepburn character stayed was Pensione Accademia.

We too are La Calcina fans. Love the Dorsoduro area.

Agree with NomadLass - if you are opera fans be sure to book the Musica a Palazzo. We saw La Traviata a wonderful experience.

I second Locanda Le Vele. Just returned from Venice.
This was our second time staying there and we had the large room ovelooking the canal with a balcony.
Its close to Ca d'Oro vapo stop and many restaurants.
Great place.!
