Where to visit Metz area Northern France?

Hi All
My DH and I will be in Cochem Germany for a few days in December and then traveling for 3 or 4 days to Dijon. We will have to give up our car in Germany and probably rent another in France as we like to visit smaller out of the way villages etc.
Can anyone suggest some nice areas from perhaps Metz to Dijon. We are interested in the Maginot Line but it seems to be a non event in winter which is dissappointing.
Thanks for any help.
Rosie

Thanks bilbo burgler. That was helpful although many pages were not available in English.
Do you have any suggestions of smaller towns on the way south to Dijon that would make nice stopover point?
Can you visit the sites or museums about WW2 in the Thionville/Metz areas in December?
thanks
Rosie

Half way bewtwen Metz and Dijon is Domremy, birthplace of Joan of Arc. It's about 10 miles east of the main road. The family home is there and a shop. I couldn't find the church.
