I am at the initial stage of planning for our Spring 06 trip and would like to go into Munich and leave from Prague. We saw King Luwig's other castles and would like to visit Herrenchiemsee on our way from Munich to Salzberg. I want to pick up the rental car and drive to Lake Chiemsee the same day we arrive and stay around the area for a night and see the castle the next day before head to Salzberg. Any recommandation for hotels around that area? I think with our family of 4 (2 adults and 2 boys age 6 and 7), we might need a junior suite or a quat. room. We prefer nice, clean hotels with charm under $200. Any suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks!

The website that Musicteacher mentions lists several fine hotels. From what I remember, Golfhotel Reinhart is right at the area where the Chiemsee boats dock. The address of Seehotel Feldhuetter seems to be right on the lake. A very fine hotel right in the middle of town is the Bayerischer Hof. I have never stayed there, but it looks very nice from the outside. We always stay at the Lindenhof. It is just about three or four blocks from the train station. The rooms are quite large, but it may be of lesser quality than you are looking.

Thank you very much Musicteacher and Joe. I briefly looked at the website and need to spend more time to find my way there in English I think Hotel Reinhart might be a good choice but need to find out more by e-mailing them since their site is only in German. Thanks again!

Although I cannot give you the names, there were, as I recall, several places located directly on the lake in Stock (the "town" which adjoins Prien and where the boats for Herrenchiemsee actually dock)...but these may have also been simply restaurants.

What I did want to tell you is that the area is very walkable...you can actually walk from the train station in Prien to the ferry docks (although I wouldn;t necessarily recommend it with a lot of luggage) or you can take the narrow gauge railroad which runs from the Bahn station in Prien to the boat docks.

I think after seeing the other Ludwig castles/palaces you'll find this one to be, perhaps, the most interesting. It is the largest of them all with an interior which truly tries, and quite well, to mimic Versailles.

A wonderful choice, IMO..enjoy it.

I would stay in Stock, where the boats leave. It's not far into Prien proper, but you probably will spend most of your time in Stock

I have stayed several times in Prien. The Hotel Reinhart is very nice, upscale (by Prien standards). Luitpold am See is also nice. The Yachthotel (upscale) is a bit out of Stock and you would probably use the car to get into town to eat. There are several nice restaurants on the main drag between Stock and Prien.

This year I am staying again in a Ferienwohnung, vacation apartment. They are the best value.

Send a letter to the Kurverwaltung, D-8210 Prien, GERMANY and get them to send you their brochure of hotels and vacation homes. They have English speaking members on their staff.

While there, try to take a boat that visits both the Herreninsel and the Fraueninsel. The Fraueninsel is an old convent and very pictureque. And try their Chiemsee Likoer!

Thank you Intrepid and treplow for the info. I will check the hotels in Stock and if I can do both Herenchiemsee and Fraueninsel in one day, definately want to do both if possiable. BTW, what is Chiemsee Likoer? I can't find anything on Google about that?

Chiemsee Likoer is a fairly sweet liquor, made according to an original recipe by the (former) nuns on the Fraueninsel. Actually, you can buy it in any grocery or tourist pavilion in the Chiemgau (that's the area surroundig the lake). Just thought you might try it at its place of origine (and first taste it, before you buy it in a bottle).

One more recommendation: If you have the time, drive around the lake clockwise. About 15 minutes from Stock is a restaurant and hotel called "Der Malerwinkel" It is a great place to have lunch, afternoon coffee or dinner. On a warm clear day, you can sit outside at the edge of the lake, with the view of the lake and the Kampenwand mountain. You have even a nice view from inside of the retaurant. It is very popular, especially on weekends, so reservations are advised.

Bumping this to the top. My wife and I would like to stay near Chiemsee, and am looking for some recent recommendations.

Has anyone stayed on any of the islands themselves? We'll have a car, and this will be a stop between Fussen and Salzburg.

As I recall, there are no accommodtaions on the island itself (where the palace is located) except the palace and, very unfortunately, you cannot stay in it. You'll have to stay in either Prien or Stock; the latter has a couple of hotels which look out on the lake.

The hotel has given me a rate of 120 euros for a night. Has anyone seen the hotel, and if so, is it worth it?

I haven't stayed at the Schlosshotel, but have eaten there. It looks attractive and substantial. Still, I wouldn't stay there. There really is nothing to do on the island in the evening other than walking in the park, unless you happen to stay there on a night when they have a concert in the Spiegelsaal (Hall of Mirrors) in the palace. Check the tourist office in Prien for schedule.

Prien and Stock are really quite lively in the evening and have some good restaurants. I would stay at the Hotel Luitpold am See, Hotel Reinhart, Yachthotel Chiemsee (for spluring) or Seehotel Feldhuetter (if I were on a budget.
