What country in Europe to visit w/teens summer 2010
Starting to plan summer vacation. My daughter is graduating from High School, and we realize this may be the last summer vacation we will have with her. What country would be best to visit in the summer for a teen who loves to travel, likes clothes, likes alot of excitement, not too interested in alot of museums and site seeing, but loves to see the culture and the beauty of a country

The "best" country would be the one she'd like most to see. I assume an 18-year-old would have some idea. Where (if anywhere) has she already been? Has she studied a language?
Or am I missing something?

ditto what Jean said.
Also, don't know which area you're from, and whether you're used to hot weather.
Since you're going in the summer, some parts of Europe can be quite hot and unbearable (eg, southern Spain, southern Italy, Greece just to name a few).
But, I'd definitely check with your daughter to see what her inclination is. Also, how long a trip are you thinking of?
Anyway, for a teenage daughter, I don't think you can go wrong with a London-Paris combo...

What month as a starter, joadan? With a daughter the age of your daughter I would have her research Europe and figure out and decide which country or countries and which areas would be of interest to her and than you all as a family could decide if her thoughts are of interest to the entire family. That should be a fun project during the winter months I would think.

hi joadan,
my kids when they were about that age loved Rome and Venice; w spent a week in each. florence was not quiet so popular - there wasn't quite so much which appealed to that age group.
I should think that Paris would be quite appealing too.

I took my kids, when my oldest graduated from high school, to Germany and Austria. They loved the trip! They helped plan and we also brought another graduating senior friend along. We had also been to London-Paris before, which was also a great trip. I would have your daughter do some exploring online to see what interests her the most. Have fun! Let us know what you all decide.

joadan - As a parent of six children and as a teacher how has escorted bundles of teenagers on European excursions I have a few items for you to consider.
1) Has she had exposure to any language other than English that is spoken in Europe? If she has studied Spanish, then Spain might be a good choice.
2) Since she is well-travelled for a teenager, she will likely be able to "roll with the punches" that often come with international travel. My thoughts here turn to the excitement of bigger cities like Paris, London and Rome, especially if she is fashion-oriented.
3) Summer time for a student might mean "relax time", so I would suggest somewhere that could be beach-oriented (like Greece).
Jean's initial advice seems to be very appropriate. Where does your daughter want to go? What interests her (for more than a few hours)? Will any destination enhance her post-secondary education or career options? I do think she should have a major say in the destinations since she will likely remember this trip forever.
I am sure you will have fun. Please let us know what you decide.
