Having been impressed with the helpful comments from others about late arrivals/early departures from various cities, I am trying my luck with this question: I will be arriving in Vilnius at 2300 from Warsaw and wonder about the best way to get a taxi to city center without being gouged? Because of the hour I would probably not be interested in public bus and private car transfer is quite expensive. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

hello i am contacting you with a strongly pronounced problem in lithuania as a mother of three and travelling to lithuania for the first time june 3 2005 we were repeatedly attacked and robbed the first time for only 70 litas several days later the thiefs retured to take 1.011,00 litas this time, both instances were reported promptly to the local police department, a report was taken but i was informed that since the \"republic\" new government that burglary and thiefs are a very common thing in lithuania i feel that i will never take my children to such a god forsaken nation such as lithuania ever again, as my personal safety and the safety of my children are very much at risk ! we are still in plateliai lithuania, but will be leaving very very soon! p.s. perhaps this e-mail can be added to a very long list of travel warnings! for potential visitors to lithuania as i feel my personal experience is definately not isolated! SINCERELY, ALEXI RUTHERFORD.
A few years ago my wife and I walked aroud central Vilnius in the afternoon and evening.
Alexi - How and where were you attacked and robbed?
I'm not quite sure what to make of alexialexi first post to the forum. Let me assure you that Lithuania is not overrun with criminals, though the usual precautions should be observed. If you don't want to arrange a transfer, make sure to agree on a fare with the driver in advance. The current exchange rate is 2.8 litas to the dollar. Try e-mailing your hotel and see if they have any additional recommendations. Enjoy your trip! (We've been to Lithuania several times and know hundreds of people who've traveled there without problems.)
I have been there twice and have had little problem with anything like that. Additionally I will add that I was in the Old Town, late at night and very tipsy, prime target for muggers. Lithuania is no more dangerous than New York.
I also walked to the train station from Domus Maria at 11pm with no problems and walked back at 5 am.
It is unfortuante that things like this happen but it is no reason to blast a country for that. There is crime all over and you have to act accordingly. I would say that perhaps she was afraid and threw her money at the 'muggers' out of concern for the safety of her kids.
